CRM Studies

Hi Folks !
I am working on a Presentation concerning CRM in FlightOperations with high social Problems. i.e. merging Flight Operations...for instance the Merger of Swiss Air and Crossair.
In the US there have been a lot of Airline Mergers.....have the Flight Operations also merged? ( i.e. mixed Cockpits )

1.)Does anybody have Ideas, where i can look for some Studies.

2.)Which Flight Operation Departments of Companies have been merged like SR & LX

Mellow greetings,

"Culture at work in aviation and medicine" by Robert Helmreich and Ashleigh Merritt is arguably a good source for research on culture (clashes) and CRM. Another source that might be of interest can be downloaded here: http://homepage.psy.utexas.edu/homep...roject/389.doc , but both are mostly on national culture as I understand it.

Two more potential references:
  • Grugulis, Irena; Wilkinson, Adrian, 2002. Managing Culture at British Airways: Hype, Hope and Reality. Long Range Planning, Vol.35(2), pp.179-194
  • Brown, Gary, 1995. Community, technology, and risk: Collective well-being in the aviation industry. Technological Forecasting & Social Change, 1995, Vol.48(3), pp.259-267

I should have full-text access to those two, e-mail me if interested. A case that may serve as an illustration how bad financial conditions and uncertainty potentially contribute to CRM-related accidents is West Caribbean Airways Flight 708, but it's probably not a very convincing case. Empirical studies directly dealing with the topic will IMHO be hard to find, although it would be a highly interesting topic, as a sound empirical research design will be virtually impossible to realize here.

Dont know about studies but I read a presentation some years ago called
"HUMAN FACTORS CLIMATE AFTER REORGANISATION" aka. merger, which was interesting. '
PM me if you are interested.

CRM in FlightOperations with high social Problems. i.e. merging Flight Operations
Recommend you post your request also on the Far East and SE Asia forum. There has always been a virtual maelstrom of CRM issues in that part of the world - whether during airline mergers or not. That will never change. Not only would there be a question of airline specific cultures to consider but more importantly the ethnic cultural mores that seem to seriously inhibit flight deck safety especially where in those cultures the captain is considered as next to God himself. And some captains really do believe that - despite copious amounts of CRM documentation thrown at them from well meaning foreigners.
