Online experiment: Instrument scanning performance
 

I'm doing the MSc. Human Factors & Safety Assessment in Aeronautics, at the Cranfield University (UK).
Currently I'm working on my thesis experiment where I'm measuring cockpit instrument performance. Now I also created an online version of the experiment to collect data at a bigger scale.

Everybody is welcome to participate (pilots and non-pilots). It is an interactive experiment that takes about 10 minutes. It's not a boring questionnaire and most participants really like it.

The experiment is not perfect, since I had to create it within a limited time and had to work with a complete new programming language (actionscript 3.0).
All general comments are welcome beneath my post. However I prefer experiment specific comments/ suggestion by private message or with the comments form in the experiment. Comments could influence participants before doing the actual experiment itself.

Tried to complete the survey, but after completing it and the final disclaimer is shown, pressing Continue button to send data to the server actually does nothing. I pressed it a few times, waited about a minute, still nothing. Not sure if it's a bug or that's how it's meant to be with no final confirmation whatsoever, but I thought you might want to know that. Good luck!

L.E. BTW, I was using Chrome 21 and Flash 11.3.31.225 if that helps.

"Survey" (indeed it's actually an interesting exercise) worked fine for me and looks very professional, too. All the best for it, makes me almost jealous for being in the "wrong" research field ;).

In the post-exercise survey, I wasn't able to change the 99 values (age, flight time). I re-did the exercise on another computer and there I was able to enter age and flight time.

Using Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox, worked well at this end. Thanks for the opportunity to confirm I made the right career choice (I don't fly ;)).

Just completed the exersice, very nice experiment ... I got a couple of things wrong, but reacted pretty quickly?

Heinrich, you have created a well-intended safety survey, but IMHO miss an important aspect which may bias your results.
Human attitudes can be influenced by the situation – the context of the task.
An SOP could be acceptable in one situation, but the same situation (requiring the same SOP) but in a different context, the SOP’s use might be judged quite differently.

Similarly, some people do not make clear distinction between SOPs and checklist drills – often interchanged, and whether the SOPs are provided for guidance or as mandated action.

Looks really well built and works nice !
One thing that got my attention: On the TCAS/weather map; I waited until the center of the trafic circle has pentrated the inner ring before pressing the coresponding button. I think the computer wants the moment the circle first touches the inner ring because I got a whooping delay on that one.
