EDI Emergency

This afternoon there was an emergency at Edinburgh Airport. (This bit is confirmed)

Have been told that a Fokker performed a fairly spectacular landing with a double engine failure. (unconfirmed)

Anyone know the scuttlebut?

I cannot believe an aircraft suffered a double engine failure, force landed at a major UK airport and no more info is forthcoming? Anyone?

Happened about 12:45. Info is it was KLM flight to AMS from EDI. A short time after departure (15-30 mins) aircraft returned. It had apparently been delayed due to tech problems.

Obviously no spotters on duty to inform the press.

Story in the EDI evening news

EMERGENCY services were called out to Edinburgh Airport after a plane which had just taken off was forced to turn back with engine problems.

Eight fire engines together with a sizeable police presence headed to the airport when pilots on a KLM flight to Amsterdam with 79 passengers on board reported problems.

A spokeswoman for KLM said: "During the flight a light came on warning of high temperature in the engines. The pilot decided to return to the airport as a precautionary measure and the flight landed safely. All the passengers were rebooked on KLM flight UK2078 which departed at 2.10pm.

"We would like to apologise again for any inconvenience caused."

Emergency services were called out as a routine in case they were required to deal with the incident just before 1pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "At 12.50pm we had a report from Edinburgh airport with respect to a Fokker 100 aircraft which had developed a problem with both of its engines. The police responded appropriately to the incident."

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders fire brigade said: "We were called to an incident where a plane developed a double engine problem but returned to the airport and landed safely.

"We were then downgraded to local standby," he added.

Lothian and Borders ambulance service were also on their way to attend the incident when they were told they were not required.
