Milan Radar U/S
That's what I've just heard.
No flights until 1500z. Any other news? Can't find anything in the web. Cheers! DII |
It's reported in the Italian media here
It basically says that the radar system controlling the North-West of the Italy broke down for the third time in 24 hrs. ENAV announced that it is back on line since 11:14 today and flights are once more operational from all northern airports. Inevitable delay are occuring, compouded by heavy fog at Rome-Fiumicino. And a comment that safety was not compromised. |
This is what you get on the site of Milan Airports:
7 Ottobre 2004 INFORMIAMO I PASSEGGERI CHE A CAUSA DI UN GUASTO AL RADAR ENAV CHE CONTROLLA IL TRAFFICO AEREO DEL NORD OVEST, I VOLI DI LINATE E MALPENSA SUBIRANNO RITARDI, CANCELLAZIONI O DIROTTAMENTO PER TUTTA LA GIORNATA DI OGGI 7 OTTOBRE 2004 "We inform all pax that following technical problems on the ENAV radar controlling North-West of Italy, LIN and MXP flights will be delayed, cancelled or rerouted all day the 7th of October" |
Thanks for the info manoffewwords!!
3 problems in 24hrs.. Not bad.. Cheers! DII |
We just passed ABESI northbound to KUDES as it happened. Swiss radar then had his hands full putting all the southbound planes in holdings, making them do 360īs and giving delay vectors. Man, were we happy that we just got out of Italy in time!

Italian press are now saying that the failure was caused by a simultaneous fault with 2 different UPS systems - the authorities are investigating as there is a possiblity of sabotage.

I suppose this is a better alternative than carrying on operations at Linate in the fog while your surface movement radar is still in its box in the attic... :hmm:
|
Kalium Chloride,
Is that ground set still crated despite the SAS disaster? I would have thought that even the Italians could move just a bit faster. |
No, the ground radar is working, it's not the one that was inop.
