BA 2024 11th August
I was a passenger on this flight, which returned to Houston with an engine problem. There was a thread on this at the time but it said nothing substantive. Does anyone know what caused the engine to fail and the nature of the damage? Is there, or will there be, any public domain information on this incident (the FAA / NTSB were all over the plane afterwards)?

May be an NTSB bulletin, or AAIB if it's a BA plane. Check on the websites for details (no links to hand, you'll have to Google!).

JFI the engine failure (GE90-85b) was a second stage hp turbine blade that failed approx. half span, that in turn took out the adjacent blade at the disc, the resultant debris wrecking the lp turbine. The smoke in the cabin was caused by the failure of the no2 bearing (front of the hp comp!) labrynth seal (by vibration?)which allowed the oil to be ingested into the compressor.
The first 'realtime' triple 7 evacuation hence the added interest of the authorities. |
