STN Diverts
 

Anyone know the cause of diverts from STN this evening? BBC London News suggests that it is due to runway fault but some flights are still landing.

Planes turned away from Stansted

Airport officials said several flights into Stansted Airport were diverted to Luton Airport on Monday because of a problem with the runway.
A spokesman for Stansted Airport said engineers investigated the runway surface and fixed the problem.

At least 17 flights were diverted on Monday afternoon.

Outgoing flights from Stansted were leaving on time, and the spokesman said flights heading to Stansted were "getting back to normal".

Runway surface problem just beyond the threshold of R23. BAA have had equipment out this afternoon working on the runway and aircraft have not been landing although they were entering the runway for take-offs from Hotel-Kilo.
Aircraft are now landing but the full length is not yet being used for take-offs.
Looks like the runway surface is being inspected after every couple of landings.

There was a hole 1mx1mx4", runway closed initially then they were arriving aircraft at a reduced landing distance on R05, with departures on R23 as MM says from Hotel Kilo, this remained the same most of the evening with landing traffic on R23 full length.

Heard that they are planning to close again at 0100 for 30 with a rduced length of 1900m until 0320 when it is full length again.

Looks like one of those big N- registered cargo MD11s put a dent in the STN tarmac on landing (so I'm told).

I was off duty yesterday but am reliably informed that it wasn't one of those N-registered Mad-Dogs.(for a change!) FX6 arrived and departed with no damage!. I am told it was a G-registered 744F!!!

The AOMIS system on the airport showed the only G-reg 744F that day as landing a couple of hours after the damage was discovered/repaired.
The first "heavies" to land after the incident were a UPS 767 followed by an AN124.
Quite a test for a temporary(?) repair!

I was'nt working at the time of the incident but i was told that it was infact a 742 operated by the saudi's which usually comes in and parks over the North Side of the airport near the inflight jet centre.

I thought at first it may have been a FX MD-11 as they seem to like landing as hard as they can!

Infact one the other day hit so hard he bounced back into the air a good 3 or 4 feet then hit again with just as much smoke as the first time!!

They must go through some tyres!
