bmi Redundancies
 

bmi have today rescinded 59 of the origional 109 redunancies. They also anticipate being able to offer a further 10 places approx to people further down the list to cover those who have already left. This means that only 40 approx will be made redindant.
They go on to say that this does NOT include any charter work, longhaul flying or bmibaby pilots, all of which will further reduce the list. Who knows, they may even be recruiting by Easter!
This has to be good news for everyone and rather than slagging each others companies off lets hope that they follow suit soon and make life better for us all, here's wishing.

It is NOT good news for everyone, and the probability is that none of the 40 will be returning for at least a year. Temper your exuberance, because there are some very disenchanted pilots out there. Indeed for some, redundancy has happened more than once, and they cannot afford another episode, with families and dependents in tow.

But anyway, good luck to those of you returning to a job instead of facing unemployment with 2 or maybe 4 weeks redundancy payment, and no leave payments. It's good that even the bmi management couldn't screw up everyone's lives in one try.

Actually MissChief I AM one of the 40 still to be made redundant!!! However, rather than moaning about it and blaming the whole world, I choose to be upbeat and optimistic about life and try to spread good news when it happens.
My hope is that ALL of us will be taken back on, and more, should longhaul and/or a charter contract happen. Liven up a little!!! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

S23 I wish you and all others facing bad news the best of luck. I am glad you are upbeat. Its too bad there are so many other pilots in bmi who would see other pilots in the group lose their jobs, especialy the fokker guys who want bmi regional to stop operating their two Bae 146's. I understand BALPA wants regional to cut all the guys that were offered short term contract work, even though many are BALPA members,talk about being shafted.

OK so it may not be zero redundancies but at least it is the start of more positive news for bmi. Let's hope it continues.

I get the feeling from chatting to the "109" that at least half of them have a job lined up with Sleazy, Go or even Dragonair. This means that if bmi need 59 pilots back, then they're going to be short. (Not including bmi baby, charterwork etc). Another triumph!

In my view the whole redundancy thing is a right dodgy scam.

bmi 'management' are very wily and sought only to surpress pay deals and reduce terms and conditions. The object being to show the pilot workforce as a smaller item on the balance sheet.

I.E. Use the Sep 11th atrocities to downsize in the full knowledge (from years of experience) that business will pick up next summer and overall pilot establishment will be unchanged.

Never mind the human cost in stressed domestic lives and increased angst amongst pilots.

The boardroom culture, usually hidden behind smokescreens and mirrors, is now understood well. The net result is that many will find jobs in better industrial cultures in more profitable business to boot.

The whole thing has been around far too long (rather like me) and is very Victorian in outlook.

Good luck all you young folk who are on your way; just don't look back.

Don't forget the 45 146 crews & 8 or so 145 crew who have gone from Regional. Some of the 146 guys are on month long short term contracts but all those who were based in STN are gone. There were also 50 or so cabin crew.
Let's hope for good news for the whole industry. It certainly is good to hear of some the guys getting jobs!

That wasin late Nov, and it doesnt seem to be wily, just an interpretation of the market at that time. Which is, what managers should do, no?

Correct me if I'm wrong (because I'm neither a BMI employee or an Airline pilot) but are the "109" that everyone quotes purely BMI or does that include the regional guys as well.

I also heard that regional were forced to make more people redundant than they wanted simply to try and strike some sort of a balance with BMI Proper. Does this then mean that the "rescindencies" will also be across the board?

the 109 were all from bmi and did not include the ones from Regional. It seems to me that bmi have gifted a bunch of typerated pilots to the oposition, now that they are needed to man the new low cost operation, that has been months in the planning? <img src="confused.gif" border="0"> <img src="confused.gif" border="0">
