DENVER -- A British Airways plane that landed at Denver International Airport late Wednesday afternoon caught on fire and critically injured a ground crew member.

The fire, which was reported at about 5:30 p.m., was quickly doused using a flame-retardant foam that covered part of the plane and tarmac along Concourse A at Gate 37.

A ramp worker, who was fueling the plane when the fire occurred, was the only casualty, DIA spokesman Steve Snyder said.

The victim was airlifted to University Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with second and third degree burns over 90 percent of his body.

His identity has not been released.

Most but not all 256 passengers were off the plane when the fire broke out in the left engine, but no passengers were hurt, a British Airways spokesperson said.

British Airways Flight 2018 had just arrived from London, and was getting ready for its trip back, 7NEWS reported.

London-bound passengers waiting at Gate 37 to board the Boeing 777 saw the flames coming out from under the left wing.

Snyder said that he does not expect the incident to delay passenger traffic, or air travel, and no concourses or gates have been closed.

Some passengers who had to be rebooked on other flights were given hotel vouchers, others went home, hoping that they will be able to catch their plane Thursday.

Authorities said that there were some dogs on board the plane, but workers were able to get the dogs out safely.

The owners of the pets later picked them up in the cargo area. The Denver Police Department is investigating the industrial incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A British Airways flight departs daily from DIA to London.
