Delta 767 Diverts to Prestwick

Delta 767 Diverted to Prestwick after taking off from Edinburgh

Seems to have had an engine problem like it was surging.

Embarrassingly all Scottish media and even the BBC is reporting as the wing being on fire

Glasgow, Edinburgh available but chose Prestwick, a few minutes further away. Seems likely to be most convenient for the airports I would guess.

Longest runway of the three,
Lowest surrounding population density

To be fair, passenger video showed fire under the wing (i.e. directly behind the engine), but the engine itself was not in view of the passenger/camera. News reporters looking at social media aren't known for interpreting details of what they see with [aviation] domain knowledge. (Substitute [aviation] with any other topic in the news).

Just the afterburner/reheat - what's the problem??

The article you quote as the cause of your embarrassment about inaccurate reporting clearly states:

footage has emerged on social media of flames around the aircraft's wing.
It appears that statement is completely accurate, especially from any journalist with negligible specific aviation knowledge. The only inaccurate reporting is your claim the wording was "the wing being on fire" in the BBC report. Obviously there could be embarrassment at making false reports and accusations, however not for the BBC on this occasion.

Edinburgh flight's emergency landing as flames shoot from wing

:ok:

Having watched from the ground a heavy DC-10 with a number 1 compressor stall departing Honolulu, I do not fault reports of flame and fire. While the wing was not on fire, the thumps, belches and flames were quite impressive and caught everyone's attention and is still a vivid memory.. She was already dumping fuel abreast Waikiki, and much closer than the normal pattern (avoiding turning into #1) . Continental @1991,

Damn, the wing fire checklist misses its chance for action again…
