Out of fuel

An Asia Airways Antonov AN-26 freighter, registration EY-322 performing a positioning flight from Djibouti (Djibouti) to Khartoum (Sudan) with 2 crew, ran out of fuel about 40nm short of Khartoum Airport and was forced to land in open terrain. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage however.

With TWO crew? An-26 has the crew of five - captain, first officer, navigator, radio operator and flight engineer. This is very strange.

Av Herald says 5 crew, and also shows photo that suggests wheels-up landing. Pretty amazing, actually -- seems to be an instance of good engine-out skills & good fortune.

as opposed to bad planning skills and bad luck for running out of motion lotion...

Sounds to me like a good news/bad news story:
*Phone rings*
"Hello boss, I have good news and bad news."
"Good news first, please .."
"Nobody hurt."
"That's a relief. And the bad news?"
"Uh, let's say that the damage won't buff out ... the bird is going to cost some money to repair. Landing site was 40 km short of pavement ..."
*click*

Glad to hear nobody hurt. Sorry to see a bird go down.

................if not good planning.

Last An-26 built in 1986, so a 32 year old airframe, at best, will it be worth recovering for extensive repair? More likely it will become a desirable residence for four or more families, only 40kms from the Khartoum CBD!

Desirable residence, kitchen, bathroom, electricity if the APU survived, ah no fuel!
