Flight becomes Cirium - whats that about?

FlightGlobal, the publisher of Flight magazine, has re-branded as Cirium! see https://www.cirium.com/thoughtcloud/introducing-cirium/

Not quite - Flight Global still remains as an entity within the bigger group:

FlightGlobal – respected publications, including flightglobal.com, Flight International and Airline Business and a leading calendar of industry conferences and events

In the email I received today:-

We are announcing a new corporate brand, Cirium.

From today, Cirium is the umbrella brand for data intelligence companies, Ascend, Innovata, Diio and FlightStats, as well as for publishing and events company FlightGlobal.

Our data and analytics products and services will now trade as Cirium and our publishing and events businesses will trade as FlightGlobal.

To find out more about Cirium click here.

What does this mean?
•This brand change will not impact your access to your products and services.
•You will start to see the branding of Cirium in your products and services.
•You can access your online products here or through your existing bookmarks.
•You will still have the same services and support, through your account team, and through our Help Desk.
•If you’re a customer of FlightGlobal.com aviation news you can access this through your existing channels.

It was a thing in the UK to rename everything with a Latin sounding name e.g Veritas

eckhard 19th Feb 2019 20:10

Don’t get me started on the (thankfully short-lived) “Consignia”!

a radioactive transuranic metallic element; produced by bombarding plutonium with helium nuclei

Cant you see the relevance to aviation in the name???

nicolai 20th Feb 2019 10:29

Are you actually thinking of "Curium", which may have an atomic number 2 higher than plutonium but is not produced by bombarding Pu with He, but instead with intense neutron flux or via other decay paths (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curium#Synthesis ). Some isotopes certainly are quite radioactive.

I think "Cirium" is a made-up vaguely Latin sounding name so it seems erudite, like many other brand names.

OldLurker 20th Feb 2019 10:48

It's really difficult nowadays to find a brand name that looks and sounds tolerable, and that doesn't mean anything negative or silly in any language that potential clients may speak, which someone else hasn't already taken and trademarked, and for which the essential domain name is available (cirium.com in this case).

Cirium itself is owned by a conglomerate called RELX Group, so it's not obvious why they needed to spend money and time creating this mid-level brand. Most likely it's just a way to create some new highly-paid top management positions, since RELX Group's board has only two executive directors.

Speculation:
Preparing to sell off the Flight Global info-services group to another company or other investors.

It will take a little moment to get used to ask for Cirium International at W.H. Smith.:}

MrNosy2 21st Feb 2019 10:04

Apparently the publishing and events part of Flight retains the 'FlightGlobal' brand so the magazine is still Flight (can you still get it in Smiths?) while the information and consultancy part becomes Cirium. However, for certain market sectors the FlightGlobal brand 'Ascend' becomes 'Ascend by Cirium' ugh. No doubt Ascend by Cirium, in use, will immediately get shortened to just Ascend so no change there.

Over the last few years Flight has acquired a number of companies, Ascend, Innovator, Diio, FlightStats etc so the rational seems to be to bring them all together under a single brand. I would have thought that 'Flight' was a good brand and over 100 years old but maybe its not as well known in the US and/or too closely associated with the magazine. Ascend also seems to be well known in its market sectors but perhaps not so much in Innovator, Diio etc markets?

My thoughts exactly. Oh! nobody knows what it is, let's call it the Post Office......

Surprisingly www.flight.com resolves to a useless search holding page and www.flight.co.uk doesn't seem to be taken.

I think you mean Innovata.

broadreach 22nd Feb 2019 07:52

Cirium? Thought that was ear wax.

Or “Diageo” - is that el Diablo’s mother?
