First lady Melania Trump's plane made an unplanned landing at Joint Base Andrews after the aircraft experienced a "minor mechanical issue."

"Everything is fine and everyone is safe," Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

The first lady was on her way to an event with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Grisham said they are "evaluating travel plans" in regards to the event.

Melania Trump and Azar were both on the flight.

Smoke could be seen inside the plane, in addition to there being a burning smell, according to a pool report. Damp washcloths were also passed out to passengers to hold over their faces for the smell.

The aircraft was a Boeing C-32A identified as “Bright Star.” [a Secret Service code name for the flight mission perhaps? - Airbubba]

Trump's motorcade departed the White House at 8:01 a.m. to Joint Base Andrews. The plane made the unplanned landing at 9 a.m. back at the base.

A second plane was boarded at 9:55 a.m.

Some reports said the burning smell and smoke were from a piece of comm gear.
