Ryanair STN cancelling on Prob40 tempo?
 
So tonight Ryanair is cancelling Flights "due thunderstorms" from STN when it's only prob 40 tempo in the period on the TAF .

Very cautious isn't it ? 😉 Or am I missing something that they're not telling us ??

Probably the sum of delays as a result of weather have reached unsustainable levels. Duty times, night curfews god knows.

Think they’d rather sacrifice the evening departures to ensure the next day/s are unaffected. They did the very same one evening about 6 1/2 years ago when there were about 2 snowflakes on the runway at STN... I can see the logic behind it, not having crew and aircraft displaced, and playing catch up for the next few days etc. But not very fair on the pax of course... but that’s what you get if you’re only willing to pay £50 for a return trip to Spain!

Just flown in and out of Stansted from Spain with Ryanair. Both legs had substantial delays sat on the aircraft due to "lack of ground staff" at stansted. No steps, baggage not unloaded from previous flight etc..... could this be a factor as flights delayed outside of Ryanairs control?

I doubt it very much as that has nothing to do with the weather, as Ryanair had claimed. They could just as easily said 'due to shortage of ground agents' or some such excuse if that was the 'real' reason.

STN Meltdown!
 
Swissport in STN has a big problem keeping good staff or staff period, so there is a constant lack of crew.
You can arrive 30min early and depart 20 min late and that is considered a good turn around!

Take 45 baed aircraft with 6 to 10 sectors to fly and You have yourself a problem.
Add the same amount of other bases flying in then leaving for home base to fly 25 minutes turnarrounds on schedules that has shrunk 5 to 8 % in lenght the last 10 years.
That is a normal day
Then add max flights in July August and you have a rather optimistic plan!
Now , add ANY day to day delay factor and You have yourself a headache the size of Texas!

Never played Domino , but I am familiar with the concept of setting them all on end in a row and then tip one.
I feel for the Crew at STN and particular the ground crew. A horrid place to work!

So any excuse to cancel a flight or pick out a Domino to stop the cascade effect I suppose.

A bit hard to run an Airline without Captains , it turns out!
Who could have guessed.

The very obvious answer is to avoid EU-261 claims on the basis of weather being an exceptional circumstance outside the control of the airline.

Then today this happens massive ryanair queues at stansted cause passengers to miss their flights

In the interests of fairness dare I point out FR are not the airline who have proactively cancelled services into/out of airports in the south east of the U.K. because of a forecast of thunderstorms.

I suspect it wasn't a thunderstorm at Stansted that was the problem, but the monster covering the English Channel and much of Eastern France heading South.

This ^^ .

Due to both the forecast of thunderstorms and their subsequent appearance in reality over e.g. northern France there were various ATC restrictions in place last night effecting flights over both the SE U.K. and parts of neighbouring Europe. It certainly forced airlines other than Ryanair to make tactical cancellations.

Each airline has its own risk tolerance, some airlines continued flying to Bali during the volcanic eruptions where as others cancelled their flights. Knock on effect plays a big part in the decision making process, local airlines could simply turn back to base but foreign ones were looking a a diversion with hotel, crew rest requirements and the aircraft being unavailable for 12 hours.

Possibly crew or aircraft availability would have been lacking and any disruption would have thrown a big spanner into network scheduling with a greater adverse effect than a few cancellations.
