Spicejet 703 off Rwy 27 in BOM

Looks like runway 27 will be out of service for a while...

I would expect a new NOTAM instead...

Hogger60 20th Sep 2017 12:42

To go along with the almost 20 pages of NOTAMs dating back to 2010. Why doesn't India ever clear out their old NOTAMS?

oliver2002 20th Sep 2017 13:39

I take all the experts here are familiar with the rains that happen each monsoon season in coastal western India.

deeceethree 20th Sep 2017 13:45

Perhaps you should be asking if pilots in an Indian airline "are familiar with the rains that happen each monsoon season in coastal western India"?

Indeed Basil and in our day you could almost guarantee someone going off the end every monsoon season!

ManaAdaSystem 20th Sep 2017 14:15

I’m actually surprised this does not happen more often.
Unless things have changed, you will not find a single grooved runway in India.
You can get the spoilers out, but you bounce along the uneven surface with your wheels hardly in contact with the ground. Add standing water and it gets really fun.
27 is really long, but has a 500 m or so underrun.
Not to mention the chance of running into a heavy rainshower anytime during the approach. Or just after landing.

Expect anything, including someone stealing the localizer antenna.

Theft of equipment hampers flights at Mumbai

From Indo-Asian News Service

Mumbai, Dec 17 (IANS) Flights to and from India's commercial capital were delayed by almost an hour for the past few days after air traffic control equipment was stolen from the city's airport, officials said Friday.

They said flights landing at Mumbai airport have had to make do with visual contact after a "localiser", part of the Instrument Landing System, was stolen Tuesday from the main runway.

Instrument Landing Systems are primarily used when visibility is poor due to fog.

Absence of "localiser" upsets flight schedule :

Mumbai, Dec 16 : Flights into and out of Mumbai continued to be delayed for the second day today due to non-availability of the "localiser", an integral component of the Instrument Landing System (ILS), on the main runway-27.

The localiser, which guides the aircraft to the centre line of the runway, was found stolen around 1730 hrs on Tuesday, AAI regional executive director S R R Rao said adding a localiser was being fabricated and should be installed by tomorrow.

"The localiser, antenna rods made of aluminium which radiate electronic waves and forms part of the ILS, hardly has any material value and we are surprised that this could have happened", he said.

Flights were today delayed by 30 to 45 minutes because of delayed arrivals and stacking up of flights over the city.

i remember all to well the LOC being stolen

I’m actually surprised this does not happen more often.
Really? Airlines have developed SOPS and stabilisation criteria so things like this never occur! But hey... its India so expect it right?

This sounds like an airline with fundamental safety issues, like most LCC that grow faster than their training and management can manage. But monsoon rains should be a legitimate excuse, just make sure that the passengers are briefed prior to departure so that can get off if they feel uncomfortable....

It's India......notam clearing out department is not manned.

ManaAdaSystem 20th Sep 2017 16:21

Operating in India during the monsoon season carries an increased operational risk, like it or not. Those of us who have been there knows.
Can’t comment on Spicejet or the standard of the company. I know nothing about them.

ironbutt57 21st Sep 2017 03:17

not only India, at least once per winter, somebody takes a trip into a snowbank in the USA as well...risk increases with operational frequency increase...the more flights in inclement conditions, the greater the chance of a boo-boo...

ManaAdaSystem 21st Sep 2017 07:02

Exactly, and sometimes  just happens. There is always a potential unknown factor ready to bite you, no matter how well you are prepared.
