Air Canada A330 loses a wheel. YUL-LHR

Only reported by the tabloids because "Heathrow and Air Canada will try and keep this to themselves but that isn't right, they should inform the public because this could have been fatal."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...out-WHEEL.html

Non-event or surprising & concerning?

wiggy 18th Apr 2017 14:26

Second attempt at this, after having had another look at the papers, most especially the Sun...

They ( and the Mail) say it was a 777-300...but the gear pictures in the Sun are certainly not of a 777-300 Main gear...Then again it seems from both articles that any file picture of any type in any livery will do to pad out the report.

As for the pilot being "in shock".......I doubt it.....

Load of  . As always, there will be an investigation and a report published.

AJW709 18th Apr 2017 14:32

If it was AC864 YUL-LHR, then thats operated by an A330 despite what the papers might say;)

rvv500 18th Apr 2017 14:41

And the picture The Daily Mail put up was of a 767-300 ER. Crap reporting.

Flyer64 18th Apr 2017 15:05

Aircraft was C-GFUR A330-300

I was there when aircraft arrived on stand.

DaveReidUK 18th Apr 2017 15:31

The Sun manages to hedge its bets:

"Incredibly, the captain still managed to land the Boeing 777-300 without a problem and there were no injuries"

followed by

"Flight AC864 an A330 with 294 passengers on board landed normally in London and taxied to the gate"

Judging by the photos it was the right front wheel on the RH MLG - interesting that it appears to have managed to taxy from a 27R exit all the way back to T2 without ATC noticing anything amiss.

And if it is indeed a 330, this would be the second such incident on that type in the last month or so.

Didn't they loose a wheel on takeoff in EBBR the other day on a 330?

Airbubba 18th Apr 2017 15:56

From the CBC, correcting the aircraft type while getting the flight number wrong and maybe not counting the nosewheels. :D

Air Canada plane loses wheel en route from Montreal to London
Spokesperson said the missing wheel did not impact safe operation of flight

CBC News Posted: Apr 18, 2017 8:28 AM ET Last Updated: Apr 18, 2017 11:23 AM ET

Flight AC833, an Airbus A330, was carrying 294 passengers when it left Montreal with a wheel missing. It landed safely at London's Heathrow Airport. An Air Canada plane that lost a wheel before taking off from Montreal's Trudeau International Airport on Sunday evening ended up landing safely at its destination of London's Heathrow Airport.

Flight AC833, an Airbus A330 carrying 294 passengers, landed Monday morning, said Air Canada spokesperson Isabelle Arthur in an email.

She said preliminary information shows the wheel separated from the plane while it was taxiing down the runway. It was unclear whether the pilot had known about the missing wheel prior to takeoff.

Arthur said because the landing gear has eight wheels, a missing one didn't cause any issues.

The plane is being repaired, Arthur said.

In February, an Air Canada flight featuring the same kind of aircraft, an Airbus A330, was grounded while preparing to depart from Brussels airport due to damage to its wheels.

"We maintain our fleet to the highest standards and these two events are isolated," Arthur told CBC News in the email.

I'm not a journalist but it looks to me like the plane was probably C-GFUR, an A330-343.

AC833 on 5th February (the flight number incorrectly quoted by CBC for the YUL-LHR incident in the previous post).

RTO at 82 kts, major damage to the gear necessitating a bogie replacement. Lost the forward right wheel on the RH MLG (same one as in yesterday's incident, in fact).

TSB Report A17F0020.

Same aircraft, holly smokes!

Air Canada better get their maintenance in order!

Herod 18th Apr 2017 16:48

"This could have been fatal" Yep, if you were standing by the fence when the wheel came down ;)

Airbubba 18th Apr 2017 17:17

Same aircraft type, the plane in the BRU incident appears to be C-GFAJ.

DaveReidUK 18th Apr 2017 17:42

Yes, my reference to "same one as in yesterday's incident" was in relation to which one of the wheels had detached. :ugh:

scifi 18th Apr 2017 18:39

Please do not jump to conclusions... The AAIB will be able to determine if it was a 777 or A330. Until they publish their report, please don't make wild guesses.
.

Tay Cough 18th Apr 2017 21:08

You'd hope anyone with more than a passing interest in aviation could determine that too.

G-CPTN 18th Apr 2017 21:43

“There is no way the plane would have taken off in Canada without someone doing the final checks on it and they would have noticed if a wheel was missing.

The proper checks could not have been carried out because these wheels are worth around £10,000 each and they don’t simply just fall off."
Senseless Garbage . . .

I do like this quote in the (so called newspaper) the sun.

A worker at Heathrow airport who does not want to be named said: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.
With no thought that the rampie might be taking the

G-ARZG 20th Apr 2017 20:15

Dead AC A330 still lurking over at BA's West Mtce Base earlier this evening.

I would suggest that unless you have inside info we are not privy to you delay your mudslinging until the results of the investigation are published .

It may have been the result of a maintenance error, However it very well may not have been

DaveReidUK 20th Apr 2017 20:40

Spares (presumably sourced from fellow Star Alliance A333 operator SAS) reportedly flown in to LHR this morning on a LH Cargo MD-11F from Arlanda.

No mudslinging... I thought it was the same aircraft (not type) as the one that had a similar incident in EBBR.

FR24 shows A330 C-GFUR on its way home ex-LHR as AC7067, even as we speak

pax britanica 21st Apr 2017 16:51

Scifi
As you have a show Uk as home country I assume you post was in the best traditions of British humour even if others, perhaps understandably. don't
