Late for a date?

Woman jumps out of moving plane at Houston airport after opening emergency exit | London Evening Standard

“A lady on this flight just opened the door and jumped out of the plane!”
p.s. Don't try this at home. Hazards: Fall off wing. Minced by fan. Run over by main gear. Sectioned by psych.

LiveryMan 30th Nov 2016 10:04

Probably a compo claim. Wait for her filing a lawsuit as the airline and aircraft manufacturer did not make it impossible for her to open the emergency exit. Also a sub claim for injuries sustained as she fell off the wing stating that the wing was at a dangerous height with no railings.

So much for the "… please remain in your seats until the a/c has come to a complete stop …" announcements!

Did she take her carry-on luggage with her? :E

RAT 5 30th Nov 2016 13:50

According to CNN the woman was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
She was not charged.

A/C in flight, but did she endanger the safety of the a/c or its pax? If yes = charged; if not = up to airline.
Surely they could get something on her, if only to stop other muppets for doing the same. It must have cost the airline some time penalty. Was this an up&over hatch or the throw it away type? If the latter then the airport could get her for littering the runway/taxiway. I wonder how many pax are going to sue her for trauma & stress caused by watching an attempted suicide. "I was so terrified I can not fly anymore, and my job requires it. This'll cost me a fortune in salary or shrink bills. How many U$ squllions can I get?"

peekay4 30th Nov 2016 14:01

RAT_5 often people are not charged if an investigation uncovers a bonafide medical / psychological issue which might have triggered the behavior.

In other cases, disruptive passengers are not charged criminally but are instead imposed administrative fines by the regulator. These cases are usually settled out of court.

737-700, has the gullwing window exits I believe. Easy to put back into position, no litter.

golfyankeesierra 30th Nov 2016 20:10

Wow, look at her walking closely past that engine
She has no idea that this engine is, more then any other due to its low position, an notorious big vacuum cleaner that has unfortunately taken life before.
Probably doesn't realize how close that was..

atakacs 30th Nov 2016 21:31

She was certainly very fortunate not to be seriously injured (or worse).

Do we have any idea of the rationale?

Given the laws in various countries around the world that make many, many, human activities illegal. Such as murder, rape, theft, assault, etc. etc., it's a wonder that anyone perpetrates a crime these days because all these laws are so successful in dissuading people from breaking said law. Hey! :ugh:

HOUSTON - The woman who jumped out of a plane while it was taxiing at Bush Intercontinental Airport won't face charges, police said.

Prosecutors said the woman is undergoing psychological tests after her jump that startled passengers on board United Airlines, Flight 1892.

I would expect that United may refuse her further service and claim for the 1 hour delay.

Judging from this clip

VIDEO: Woman jumps out of plane at Houston airport | KXAN.com

the aircraft had stopped short of the gate, at which point the woman appears to have jumped from the rear of the wing then walked under it towards the terminal, passing next to the No 2 engine en route.

"Surely they could get something on her, if only to stop other muppets for doing the same."
There's really no point.

The threat of punishment works as a deterrent against people who are making some kind of rational assessment of the risks versus benefits of taking some action.

Imposing criminal penalties on crazy people for doing crazy things, does nothing to deter other crazy people; by definition crazy people are not really considering the consequences of their actions.

I guarantee you that the possibility of punishment did not in the slightest enter into the decision process (if you want to call it that) that led this person to open the emergency exit.

Out of interest, is there any annunciation on the flight deck when an emergency exit is opened ?

If not, and power had been applied to resume taxying onto the stand, the outcome might have been very different.

An open emergency exit door should trigger a Master Caution with "DOORS" annunciation, and the corresponding door's warning light illuminated on the overhead panel.

As for the woman running near the #2 engine. I am a retired pilot from a major airline in the USA. Unless the ramp was contaminated or MEL factors had to be considered, we would shut down the #2 engine during taxi so the ramp guys could expedite the baggage offload. Wheel chairs and baby strollers etc.

RexBanner 2nd Dec 2016 06:45

Ah that's alright then!

Hope you slowed down to less than walking speed. Baggage arrived at the gate before the pax. ;)
