Two crashes off Timika (Papua)

A DHC-4 Turbo Caribou PK-SWW left the town of Timika last night with 4 persons on board, but lost contact less than half an hour later. Local media report that an ELT signal was received; However, thick fog is preventing SAR teams from confirming the crash location. The Caribou is owned by a local authority but operated by a third party company. It's unclear who the operator is (either Trigana or Alfa Trans).

And separately an AS 350 B2 helicopter carrying food and building materials took of from Timika at at 9 a.m. local time before crashing on its second flight of the day:

Reports suggest the Turbo Caribou was tracking IMC towards Jila Pass, a particularly inhospitable area in VMC, let alone IMC. The coordinates suggest they missed the entry to the pass by about 1 nm and if following cruising levels 500 feet below the top of the terrain they've impacted.

It's quite pathetic that the FAA raised Indonesia to category 1 when it's clear that the regulator is just as toothless as ever and operators are going to continue to lose airframes and lives.

I believe I'm right in saying that this accident has reduced the world fleet of Turbo Cariboux by one-third.

Indonesia locates missing plane, recover 4 bodies

Indonesia locates missing plane, recover 4 bodies | Bangkok Post: news

JAKARTA - Indonesia's search and rescue agency says it has recovered four bodies from the wreckage of a cargo plane that went missing in mountainous Papua.

Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the National Search and Rescue Agency chief, said Tuesday that the wreckage was found on terrain at an elevation of about 3,660 metres in the Jayawijaya area.

A search for the Canadian-made DHC4 Turbo Caribou PK-SWW plane began Monday after it didn't arrive at its destination. Search efforts were disrupted by poor weather.

Much of Papua, which is the easternmost part of the Indonesian archipelago, is covered with impenetrable jungles and mountains. In the past, some planes that have crashed there have never been found.

And in the same area .........

A Cessna Caravan cargo plane skidded off the runway at Aminggaru Airport in Ilaga, Papua, on Wednesday, forcing authorities to temporarily close the airport to allow for the removal of the aircraft.
There was no fatality or injury in the incident.

It was the third accident in the area in the past two months.

A Caravan aircraft operated by Asia One failed to land at Aminggaru Airport on Oct.13. Both pilot and co-pilot survived.

A Caribou plane owned by the Puncak administration crashed shortly before it landed at Aminggaru Airport on Oct. 31.
The pilot and three other crew members died.

Aminggaru Airport’s runway is 600 meters in length and 18 m wide. The airport only operates from 6 a.m. to noon every day because smog (??) normally blankets the airport in the afternoon
