United Airlines 888 inflight engine shutdown

Hi mates, today 27th I was flying over anchorage fir and at 2205UTC I have heard in frequency that the engine 3 has been shut down and they've asked to come back to SFO.
Any other news about that? Thanks

Here's the UA 888 flight track from the usual source:

Lucky for the pax that they were not on a twin.

Yep, Juneau is a real garden spot this time of year. ;)

Doubt if one can get a 747 into Juneau- short field- into a valley with tight turn, etc.

In that case, turn for Anchorage and make happy hour at F Street. :ok:

Why?
Or were you trying to be funny?

Engine failure on a twin would, normally, require a diversion to the nearest suitable airport.

4forward8back 28th Jan 2016 10:38

Well....I've yet to have number 3 fail on my twin.

Sorry, sorry.

FedEx MD-10/11 guys would be faced with a diversion to the nearest suitable airport if, (for example), they had previously shut down #2 for whatever reason and later, further along enroute, #3 failed. Assuming #2 is ineligible for restarting.

888 inflight engine shutdown

Lost Torch?

With the loss of only one torch, dear old UA-888 can go anywhere it wants to go. Repairs and pax accommodation in SFO are a lot easer in SFO and there are multiple other choice if needed. With three apparently still blowing lots of hot air, 'nearest suitable' is not required. Your can bet that this was an OPS decision, not a crew choice.

Probably did not have fuel to make it to final destination.
