Avherald summary here.
Accident: Spicejet DH8D at Hubli on Mar 8th 2015, runway excursion on landing Cheers |
This is the week of runway excursions, left side preferred
http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/00b...5d7l01xlzg.jpg It seems that runway is not suitable for commercial air transport operations. It is narrower, no Metar is available. The local weather station reported at 17:30L: thunderstorms, rain, temperature 22 degrees C, dew point 19 degrees C, QNH 1010 hPa, 4km visibility, winds from east at 6 knots. At 20:30L the weather station reported: thunderstorms, rain, temperature 21 degrees C, dew point 19 degrees C, QNH 1015 hPa, visibility 4km, winds from southwest at 4 knots. The airport features a runway 08/26 of 1674 meters/5490 feet length and one NDB circling approach as only instrument approach to the aerodrome. |
Nowt wrong with the runway, it is long enough and wide enough for a Dash 8
|
Ok, sorry. Dash 8, FAR landing field length (SL, ISA, MLW, HGW) 4,221 ft 1,287 m
|
There are many runways routinely and safely operated into that require a performance-limited MLW to be applied instead of structural MLW also with DH8 aircraft.
The handbook value for structural MLW at ISA, zero slope and so on is nothing more than a figure for comparability and has not much impact on real life operation. |
I wonder if the left main gear collapsed beforehand?
|
Elevation 2,171ft amsl.
That would increase the distance needed a bit but not that much, then again if the runway is short you usually go off the end, not the side........ |
From the link above:
The aircraft touched down hard causing the left main gear to collapse and veered off the runway. |
I suspect that geometry plays a significant part.
All other things being equal, a wing gear leg that retracts aft (particularly on a high-wing aircraft) is always going to have a tougher life than one that retracts sideways or one that, as in the case of the ATR, is fuselage-mounted. |
Could be an almost new aircraft, there were some passing through BOH (Bournemouth, UK) on delivery only a few months ago.
|
Four-year-old airframe.

If there was an expat in the LH or RHS there will be huge repercussions. If it's a local? Who knows? Probably elevated to high office for not doing more damage.
|
During my tenure in SG an expat has landed on the wrong runway and kept his job.
It would be wise to temper any brash assumptions wrt expat vs local.:= |
The Dash has a quite tough main gear really. They get to ram runways the world over day after day with little consequence.
However. the design is basically a large beefy trailing drag strut, hinged at the front and bottom of the main leg, The leg is held at te htop by an 'H' shaped brace that is itself held by another brace, that is held in the locked position by geometric locks and a pair of large springs....... Er. usually, it works fine. |
