747 off the runway at Abuja
A cargo 747 is off the runway at Abuja. No casualties, but extensive damage to aircraft

Be interesting to see how this plays out.
If the a/c was Saudi owned and operated and the Capt was a foreign i:mad:l he will be in real trouble. Local, well he will probably be elevated to high office as he would have displayed superior skills to survive such a calamity. |
Most likely one of their TF- registered leases.
|
I love the spokesman's comment that it landed safely but overran and ended up in the maintenance area, like stopping on the runway isn't a requisite element of a safe landing!
|
And it landed safely but burst into flames :D
|
No 3 engine is off and extensive damage to wing root. Apparently no2 engine also off, though can't be sure from my standpoint.
Cargo is five APCs for Nigeria Army. Rumours that there is also explosive material on board, but this is hotly denied by the Army. Looks like the aircraft overshot a high speed turn off, then mangled several heavy plant machines that were working near the runway. |
any idea of aircraft reg ?
|
jacdec.de gives EK-74798 as ID
Could be some of the usual nigerian exaggeration.. |
Most likely one of their TF- registered leases. |
Police anti-bomb squad now attending - looks like somebody doesn't believe the Army...

With photo here: ASN Aircraft accident Boeing 747-281BSF EK-74798 Abuja International Airport (ABV)
Not much detail, but there seems to be something on the r/h side. Possibly a tanker or maybe emergency equipment ? |
The yellow equipment you see in the photo are various excavators, generators etc that were crushed by the aircraft. They had been carrying out some maintenance work at the side of the runway.
|
It's collected a fuel bowser as well :eek::eek:
|
report of an overrun doesn't make sense as there are no maintenence areas at the ends of the runway.

Given that 747-200 Freighters are not terribly valuable anymore, I'd guess a hull loss.
|
WIP is on the rwy. Notam on lda 2500 m - lightning very poor at the end though!!
On the skid marks it looks like they saw the runway end comming close too fast, and could not make the highspeed exit, unfortunately they made it to the grass where heavy machines where parked for the night. Eng 2+3 both heavy damaged. Lots of military and 2 firetrucks during unloading, so maybe a lucky day! At least only aluminium damaged.... |

Given that 747-200 Freighters are not terribly valuable anymore, I'd guess a hull loss. Think this may depend on whether or not it has a nose door? Some of the -300 BCF conversions are not so popular as they don't have a nose door. |
