Aircraft landed on opposite runway to that cleared for!

Incident: Kabo B742 at Sokoto on Oct 4th 2013, touched localizer antenna on approach and burst body gear tyres

A B742 on a Hajj flight in Nigeria landed on the opposite runway to that cleared, struck the localiser and damaged a number of tyres.

Are you surprised? Well I'm not. All that Swiss cheese stuff was probably nonsense, as there would have been no Swiss cheese there in the first place.

This is the fruit of cancerous corruption and nepotism. I know, it is not only on the dark continent.

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 6th Oct 2013 13:36

Staggering and incomprehensible. Don't they have radar?

DaveReidUK 6th Oct 2013 13:44

Don't they have radar?
Or, failing that, somebody in the VCR who looks out of the window occasionally ...

Gulfstreamaviator 6th Oct 2013 13:49

or failing that

windows in the cockpit.

.. with 494 passengers and 18 crew, was cleared to land on Sokoto's runway 08 but landed on opposite runway 26..

...deflated while landing in Sokoto to pick up more pilgrims..
They gonna put them in the cargo holds?

eastern wiseguy 6th Oct 2013 15:12

Or a d/f ?

grounded27 6th Oct 2013 15:49

They gonna put them in the cargo holds?
The aircraft had capacity for 50+ more pax.

latetonite 6th Oct 2013 16:00

Com'on guys, he landed on the correct tarmac!

Don_Apron 6th Oct 2013 17:45

I think the problems in this case started well before the numbers on the R/W.

What about the OBS on the R/W heading? What about the ILS freq, if was operative? ADF, VOR needles. Compass heading? Looking out the window, as suggested before?

FLYDHC8 6th Oct 2013 21:37

I think we might be getting it all wrong. From what I understand they were cleared for runway 08 but for some reason (which we don't know) declined to land on runway 08 and decided to land on runway 26.

Correct me if I am wrong but that is what I understood from the article.

kip 6th Oct 2013 21:51

Not wrong runway!

The local news here is full of twisted and wrong information about flightaccidents - but most agree that they were offered rwy 08 but asked for 26 - so if they really hit the llz antenna it looks more like a visual 26 that went wrong

You´ve got to be kidding... in Sokoto?

Two words:

Kabo, Nigeria.

Yes I have flown in the Nigeria HAJJ a few years ago. For Kabo. Never again. :ugh:

Hi, are we being a bit mean towards the pilots of that plane, and should we not be directing some flack towards the Tower Controller?
I take it that at no time was he being radar vectored onto any part of the circuit, and was flying visually all the way.

The pilot must have intended from 60 miles out to fly towards a ten mile final on RW26. A ten mile final to RW08 is 20+ miles away and would have needed up to 20 degrees difference in course.

Then when he is on short final the Tower gives him the incorrect clearance to land on the other runway... enough to unstabalise any approach, and cause him to hit the aerials.

btw.. aren't the aerials each side of the runway, and not on the centre-line?

DaveReidUK 7th Oct 2013 10:33

Yes - if you're talking about the glideslope antenna, it's normally abeam the runway near the TDZ.

But this guy hit the localizer array:

You know, I really don't think getting an incorrect landing clearance is good enough excuse to get unstable and hit approach lights.

gcal 8th Oct 2013 09:47

Many moons ago approaching Lagos and clearance given to land despite there being another aircraft on the runway (moving slowly, not on a take off or landing run).
We went around but were then berated by air traffic control for not having obeyed their instructions 'Why did you not land when ordered'!
It's a different world.

FLYDHC8 8th Oct 2013 10:43

gcal,

Like you said, "many moons ago"
