Public Broadcaster here just broken into regular news programme to say that a 'plane had crashed shortly after take-off from Lagos, nor further details yet.

Anyone got more detail?

Reuters is saying "small passenger plane."

Pictures look bad.

Arik Air I believe. That's all that's scheduled to land at around this time.

What part of "crashed shortly after take-off from Lagos" are you having trouble understanding?

Reports are suggesting that this was a Brasilia of Associated Aviation departing Lagos bound for Akure.

Approx 09.30 local an Associated Airlines Embraer 120 crashed shortly after take off from the domestic runway, into land next to fuel farm. Aircraft reported to have struggled to gain height, rolled to the right & crashed just outside the boundry fence and caught fire. Reported 20 SOB, not confirmed.

Just seen the crash site and wreckage....

Difficult to believe that there are survivors - terrible mess - but hope so....

For sure, if they were hot and heavy, an EFATO after V1 would have taken some pretty sharp response.. the reported rolling and wing-rocking would seem to suggest that they were on the graveyard side of blue-line.

It has been confirmed aircraft crashed inside the fuel farm but did not make contact with tank or related equipment. On site/fuel farm fire fighters brought fire under control. No one on ground killed or injured.

The plane was carrying the body of Doctor Olusegun Agagu, former governor of Ondo State, who died at his home in Lagos on 13 September.

Sadly, this tends to happen in many parts of Africa.

That's one way of saying it, I suppose.

It appears that a tip of the cap is due to the the firefighters who prevented that crash from becoming a much larger mess. Goodonya, gents. :ok:

Despite all the best intentions, improving the attitudes that underpin decision making in African aviation is the greatest challenge.

Even the IOSA agreement will be meaningless if the operators, regulators and key people within those organisations continue to take the view that shortcuts and expedience are acceptable set of options "because this is Africa".

It is the unacceptable accident rate that is the special case, not the continent where those accidents take place, and that is something that is still being ignored by the people entrusted to make the changes.

HeathrowAirport, the photo you have posted is one of a previous accident not this one. I know some news agencies have made the same mistake. I think it is one of the Dana Air MD-83 which crashed into a block of flats in June last year.

If it's the Dana Air MD-83, it's strange that the photo has never surfaced until today.

I'd say it's the Brasilia, as is this one from the same photographer:
