'Plane crash at Lagos, Nigeria

Public Broadcaster here just broken into regular news programme to say that a 'plane had crashed shortly after take-off from Lagos, nor further details yet.

Anyone got more detail?

Huck 3rd Oct 2013 09:42

Reuters is saying "small passenger plane."

Pictures look bad.

Arik Air I believe. That's all that's scheduled to land at around this time.

Nigeria: Proffering Ways to Improve Safety in Air Transport

"Geographically, the biggest challenge in Africa where the accident rate is 18 times worse than the global average," said the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of IATA, Tony Tyler.

Tyler is hoping that the rate of accident will reduce drastically when the airlines in the region pass the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), which would become a precondition for the establishment of airlines in the continent by end of 2015.

What part of "crashed shortly after take-off from Lagos" are you having trouble understanding?

Reports are suggesting that this was a Brasilia of Associated Aviation departing Lagos bound for Akure.

N4565L 3rd Oct 2013 10:20

Approx 09.30 local an Associated Airlines Embraer 120 crashed shortly after take off from the domestic runway, into land next to fuel farm. Aircraft reported to have struggled to gain height, rolled to the right & crashed just outside the boundry fence and caught fire. Reported 20 SOB, not confirmed.

DaveReidUK 3rd Oct 2013 10:24

Yes, clearly one of their four Brasilias:

Just seen the crash site and wreckage....

Difficult to believe that there are survivors - terrible mess - but hope so....

talkpedlar 3rd Oct 2013 11:22

BBC news story quoting airport official that..

..aircraft suffered engine failure after take-off .. no doubt a supposition unless crew managed to report nature of problem to ATC..

For sure, if they were hot and heavy, an EFATO after V1 would have taken some pretty sharp response.. the reported rolling and wing-rocking would seem to suggest that they were on the graveyard side of blue-line.

N4565L 3rd Oct 2013 11:30

It has been confirmed aircraft crashed inside the fuel farm but did not make contact with tank or related equipment. On site/fuel farm fire fighters brought fire under control. No one on ground killed or injured.

The plane was carrying the body of Doctor Olusegun Agagu, former governor of Ondo State, who died at his home in Lagos on 13 September.

'Area' boys broke into the area and were looting the bodies

'Area' boys broke into the area and were looting the bodies.
Sadly, this tends to happen in many parts of Africa.

Lonewolf_50 3rd Oct 2013 12:22

The plane couldn't lift properly so it just came down," Aviation Ministry spokesman Joe Obi told Reuters.
That's one way of saying it, I suppose.

It appears that a tip of the cap is due to the the firefighters who prevented that crash from becoming a much larger mess. Goodonya, gents. :ok:

For the "area boys" who arrived to lighten the loads on various corpses, no tip of the cap.

Despite all the best intentions, improving the attitudes that underpin decision making in African aviation is the greatest challenge.

Even the IOSA agreement will be meaningless if the operators, regulators and key people within those organisations continue to take the view that shortcuts and expedience are acceptable set of options "because this is Africa".

It is the unacceptable accident rate that is the special case, not the continent where those accidents take place, and that is something that is still being ignored by the people entrusted to make the changes.

HeathrowAirport, the photo you have posted is one of a previous accident not this one. I know some news agencies have made the same mistake. I think it is one of the Dana Air MD-83 which crashed into a block of flats in June last year.

If it's the Dana Air MD-83, it's strange that the photo has never surfaced until today.

I'd say it's the Brasilia, as is this one from the same photographer:

So, despite the OP getting all the other details wrong (not Arik Air, not landing) he seems to have got this bit correct.

srobarts 3rd Oct 2013 18:37

I stand corrected, DR
