UTair overrun at Kiev

At 12.15 on July 15 at the Kiev airport a Boeing-737-500 VQ-BJM of UTair overran the runway at Kiev. None of the 77 passengers and crew were injured. The airport was temporarily closed.
See photo here.

Very lucky.

Quick fix dig a few trenches 10 degree incline and tow out backwards.

The grass is so flat they could just have apply power and taxi away.

Yellow & Blue Baron 16th Jul 2013 08:00

Tyre indentation marks in the grass in front of the aircraft suggest that it has already been towed/pushed back some distance.

Yes quite right. In fact if they were clever about it they could have avoided an incident altogether!

TWR: UT798 please confirm that you have overshot the runway?

UT798: No no, we are simply turning onto taxiway bravo. Nothing to see here.

Apply reverse thrust and back out onto the tarmac.

Having read many excursion incidents before, frequently, the most damage is caused by trying to get back onto the paved surface.

As Kiev is by no means short, and VRef in a 735 not too hot, I expect a precis of the stabilisation (or not) of the approach may be illuminating. :hmm:

Depends which of the two airports it was. The secondary one only has 7500ft although even that is twice as long as a 737-500 needs to stop.

It was indeed at Zhulyany.
