Plane Overshoots Runway in Myanmar

A passenger plane carrying 55 people overshot the end of a runway at an airport in eastern Myanmar due to suspected brake failure, injuring two people, an official said on Friday.

The Chinese-made Xian MA60 turboprop stopped about 200 meters beyond the runway and suffered damage to its propeller, landing gear and engine, according to state media.

The incident, which happened on Thursday in Monghsat in Shan State, involved a flight operated by state-owned Myanma Airways.

Win Swe Tun, deputy director general of the government’s Civil Aviation Department, told AFP that an investigation had been launched into the cause.

“It’s assumed it was because of a brake system failure,” he told AFP by telephone from Monghsat, adding that two passengers were sent to a hospital with “minor injuries.”

“The plane was bought new from China and only used for about three years,” he added.

Concerns about Myanmar’s air safety were heightened by an airplane crash-landing in December at Heho airport, also in Shan State, that left two people dead, with foreign tourists fleeing the burning jet.

Myanmar’s aviation and tourist industries are struggling to keep up with fast-growing demand as foreign visitors flock to the country, which is emerging from decades of junta rule.

I don't see any evidence of flaps being down.
Would you clean up the cockpit after coming to a sudden stop?

Flaps not being fully down could suggest a hydraulic system failure, which would also explain loss of braking power. A flapless landing on the MA60 has a Vref of 140 kts ... runway length was 1400 metres. Landing this fast without brakes on a 1400 m runway, what else can you expect but an overrun?

Did you mean one more overshoot for the MA60 besides Wamena or one more besides the Trigana overshoot at Wamena yesterday?

Surely the MA-60 must have the worst accident record of any aircraft. There is only a handful of them in service and almost all have had crashes.

I guess "Made in China" doesn't fit well on aircraft. :O

it might also have something to do with the airlines that buy this aircraft not being very reputable

Some people might, some might not.

I don't think this is something that could carry any weight either way and certainly isn't grounds for speculating on hydraulic failures or anything else. It was photographed with flaps up, that's as much as can be said at this stage.

Any pics ?

Do you think there would be enough hydraulics left to retract the flaps?
