The over runs just keep on coming:{

Incident: Trigana B733 at Wamena on May 20th 2013, overran runway on landing

Wamena is a damn site tougher place to land at than Denpasar for heavens sake - only 1800m long or thereabout and in the mountains

I think you can expect Indonesia to have a higher average rate of incidents & accidents than most countries - a lot of the airstrips are VERY basic, they are in some horrible locations and the infrastructure for radar, weather etc etc is spread very thin

Unfortunately, because of the size of the place and the fact that it's all islands means you really have to fly (and anyone who has been on Night Bus from Bandung - Jakarta will tell you what fear really means....)

Wamena is something like 1600m long (doubt it was extended since I was there) at elevation 1600m high - I doubt 733 has an adequate performance to go there, one direction only and surrounded by mountains

A Trigana Air Service Boeing 737-300, registration PK-YRZ performing freight flight TGN-7329 from Jayapura to Wamena (Indonesia), overran the end of runway 33 by about 5 meters/15 feet while landing at Wamena at 16:07L (07:07Z) and came
to a stop with the nose gear on soft ground.

No injuries and no damage occurred.
As overruns go, this at least had the virtue of nobody getting hurt, and as reported, not taking the aircraft out of service.

Could have been worse, eh? :cool:

If I'm not mistaken, there are a couple of what look like B732s on the ground at Wamena visible on Google Earth.

A few years ago, I looked at a RNP procedures for few airports in the area, WAPP and WAMM for a certain manufacturer for their 800 model. Some crazy stuff down there...and lining up the runways with mountain tops just doesnt work anymore...

It seems to provide little room for error since 1600m for take off and

1400 for landing when using the runway in question of 1800m and the

complexity of mountains and possible clouds etc.

I guess Trigana source for performance calcs shall be the same one you've quoted :}

Seriously, 1500..1600m is challenging enough for 733 with any decent payload (and btw there is no fuel in Wamena, it is always roundtrip fuel onboard), now if you add 5000 ft elevation it is a story on its own.

If they overran the runway by five meters (and landed on 15), they should have still been on the short gravel overrun/area that never got paved. Or did they overrun the overrun?

Rumor (when the 737s first started going in) was that the 737s were operating underweight to make it work, not sure if that is still the case or not. While they strongly prefer landing on 15, they do occasionally land on 33. They regularly depart from both runways. It most definitely is not a one way runway.

Last I heard, there were two -200s, Trigana had up to three 737s (I assume all -300s) and Cardig Air had one 737 of some variety (-300 or later) operating to Wamena.

well I seem to remember Nigerian A/W taking three F-27's off the end of the runway in a week at ?Enugu? in the '80's IIRC
