Lion Air Drug Bust AGAIN
The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested early on Saturday a Lion Air pilot, identified as S.S., at a hotel room in Surabaya, East Java, for allegedly using crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu.
“Yes, it is true. I have received the report on the pilot this morning,” BNN deputy Ins. Gen. Thomas Tommy Sagiman said, as quoted by tribunnews.com. S.S. was caught in his hotel room with 0.04 grams of crystal meth in his possession. A urine test indicated that he had also consumed the drug. The arrest was the third such case within the last two months. Earlier this month, a Lion Air pilot, identified as A, was caught with crystal methamphetamine in his possession in a karaoke bar in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Late last year, another Lion Air pilot Muhammad Nasri and two co-pilots were arrested at a drugs party in Tangerang, Banten. Indonesia’s aviation industry has admitted concern over widespread drug use, and the House of Representatives will summon Lion Air management after the arrest of a Lion pilot for drug use in Surabaya on Saturday, the second such case in two months.
Indonesia National Air Carriers Association secretary general Tengku Burhanuddin said the use of drugs among airline crews had tainted the industry’s image, and he called on the government to take quick action to crack down on the circulation of drugs. “This case has shown that drugs have become a national problem because it could have been among anybody, including pilots,” he said. “We call on the government to do its part and not just depend on us.” Tengku asked the government to permanently ban pilots by withdrawing their licenses instead of just temporarily grounding them if they were caught using illicit drugs. “License withdrawal and being blacklisted from all airlines would be a very heavy punishment that could prevent more widespread use of drugs,” Tengku said. Police in Surabaya arrested the Lion Air pilot, identified as 44-year-old Syaiful Salam, who had been caught with 0.4 grams of methamphetamine and a meth pipe in a Surabaya hotel room during a pre-dawn bust on Saturday. He was scheduled to go on duty at 6 a.m. Sr. Comr. Bambang Triyanto, the East Java Police’s anti-narcotics director, confirmed on Saturday that the raid had been carried out jointly with the BNNP, the provincial branch of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN). Jan D. Fretes, the head of the BNNP, said officials were treating the case seriously because of the safety implications had the pilot flown while under the influence. “This relates to public safety and we want to avoid an air accident caused by the actions of a pilot who is high on drugs,” he said. Jan said the bust had been based on information from a Lion Air pilot who was arrested last month for meth possession. Jan said Syaiful claimed to have bought the drugs from a Surabaya dealer identified only as Y.S. Police are still looking for the dealer. “He said the dealer delivered the drugs to his room and he paid Rp 300,000 [$34] for them,” he said. He confirmed that Syaiful later tested positive for drug use. Another pilot, Hanum Aiyaksa, was arrested in a Makassar hotel on Jan. 10 with an undisclosed amount of meth. Last September, a Lion Air pilot and two co-pilots were arrested in possession of ecstasy and meth. They had bought the drugs prior to flying from Jakarta to Surabaya, but the airline denied they were high during the flight. Muhammad Arwani Thomafi, a member of the House commission overseeing transportation, said lawmakers would summon the Transportation Minister and Lion Air management. “We had summoned them previously due to a similar case with a pilot. Why should the same case happen again?” he said. |
In fairness i'm sure that was Kretek Cigarettes when I was a regular smoker on the 737 we had a couple of Indo FOs (quite reasonable chaps too) who took advantage of the fact I used durries myself. They chained-smoked Kreteks from gear up to about 500ft on landing but there was nothing I could do as I did not want to appear as a two-faced son of a bitch. Problem solved when I didn't smoke at all during flight whenever these blokes were with me. At least they had good taste in booze. |

Another Indonesian Pilot Busted in Airline Drug Test Wed, 08 Feb 2012 00:31:38 GMT Another co-pilot failed to pass a random drug test at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Tuesday. (Reuters Photo/Crack Palinggi) Another co-pilot failed to pass a drug test in a random check on crew members at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, an official said on Tuesday. The co-pilot was the seventh crew member found possessing or having consumed drugs since September. Four pilots and two co-pilots have been arrested on drug charges since then. Deputy Transportation Minister Bambang Susantono said urine tests were conducted on 94 crew members at the airport on Monday afternoon. There were indications that one co-pilot could have consumed drugs. “One co-pilot has been barred from flying because there was a positive indication [of drug consumption], so a more thorough drug test is needed,” he said. Bambang declined to identify the co-pilot’s name or his airline but said he worked for an Indonesian aviation company. The four pilots and two co-pilots arrested on suspicion of drug possession or consumption since September have been from the private air carrier Lion Air. Bambang said the ministry and the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) would continue holding random checks on crew to clean the sector of drug users. “This is matter of safety, so we shouldn’t play around,” he said. “On the matter of sanctions for pilots, it is of course the revocation of their licenses and a strong reprimand for the airline.” Herry Bakti Singayuda Gumay, the director general for air transportation, said a new civil aviation safety regulation would require airlines to supervise the use of alcohol and illegal drugs among their employees. “It [the regulation] will be issued in another two months, and part of it says that national airline companies are required to conduct drug tests for at least 50 percent of their air crew every year with a reliable method,” Bambang said. Jan de Fretes, head of the East Java Anti-Narcotics Agency, said his office had to coordinate with the head office in Jakarta before implementing any drug tests on crew members. Pilots, he said, “are not like bus drivers. Their schedules are really tight and we cannot just conduct random raids on these pilots.” Thus far, he added, the agency had only been able to call on crew members to avoid drug consumption because it could affect their passengers. Trikora Harjo, the general manager of Juanda International Airport operator Angkasa Pura I Juanda, said his institution could only test crew members for drugs if their airlines requested it. Otherwise, he said, Angkasa Pura I lacked the authority to conduct any tests. He added that Juanda Airport had a medical facility that could be used to conduct drug tests and analyze the results, but so far none of the airlines operating out of the airport had requested those checks. Aviation observer Dudi Sudibyo said pilots found to have consumed drugs should not just be dismissed from the airline. “If they are proven guilty, they should have their flying licenses frozen,” Dudi said. Stephanus Gerardus, president of the Garuda Pilots Association, said the use of drugs by pilot or co-pilots was strongly and absolutely prohibited. “The professional punishment is the revocation of their pilot’s license, and that means everything,” he said. On Monday, the Transportation Ministry announced that it had withdrawn the licenses of the four Lion Air pilots and two co-pilots who had tested positive for drugs. The airline said it would stick to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. |
I think shabu shabu would be a lot more healthy for the pilot(s) than the kretek ciggies, not so good for the passengers though. Can't understand why the aircrew are doing this. Aren't they happy with their lot at Lion? I mean aisles full of beautiful gadis (well that might be stretching it, no pun intended) - what more could they want? An INS that works?

Meth is filth and highly addictive - have a read of this book - it's entertaining as well as a good intro as how quickly meth can take over a life:
I tried Meth once - I was awake for three days & thought I was going to die at one point - the fatigue crash at the end was pure evil. The downer - misery. I never tried it again for obvious reasons. But as you'll read in the book - for some people it all starts off so well, so easy, so nice...by the time they realise they aren't - they are fooked. Shabu-shabu, crank, bing, ice, whatever you want to call meth is not for a pilot or anybody else - better than kratek cigarettes - nor most of the drugs I've ever tried. |
