Egypt Air Cockpit Fire

CAIRO — Airport officials say some 300 passengers were rushed off an Egypt Air plane that caught fire before takeoff from Cairo.

The officials say an electrical short in the cockpit caused the fire early Friday as the plane was scheduled to fly to Jiddah, Saudi Arabia.

The passengers were rushed off the plane to a transit hall as firefighters put out the flames. The officials said two firefighters were later taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Any idea was it a fully occupied A330-300 or any of the 777?

You could check it out at the online flightplan. CAI-JED is operated mostly with B738 and B777. Now make your choice, although I would not wonder if they manage to squeeze in 300 PAX into a 738.

I am told it was a 777

Is this going to degenerate to the Egypt Air flight when the P1 & P2 managed to lock themselves out of the cockpit mid-flight......had to fire axe their way back in, with help from unamused First Class audience.

I believe there is some history of electrical cockpit fires on this type in the past?

Photo of damage

Hole burnt through B777

I don't think there's much of a history of this on 777s - certainly haven't come across one as serious as this.

From the damage (and given the age of the aircraft - 14yrs), looks like a write off.

laptop fire??

Hmmm....after the Asiana loss the other day, I am wondering if this hole/fire was burnt thru the side from a laptop/LI ion fire at all - not sure if they use laptops or EFPs what ever class etc - but that would be the spot that the FO would likely have the computer while charging it ( maybe it was flat after the last sector and on charge who knows...??)

just making up lots of "what ifs and conjecture "but interesting to find out what caught fire... and of course the oxy mask is around there too... which might not have helped...

lucky to have occurred on the ground !

Yes the hole looks right where the oxygen station is. This was a VERY lucky accident. If the plane had have just got airborne we could well be looking at the first 777 fatality. I hope the FAA/NTBS/Boeing are on to this like bees on a honey pot

BA had the first 777 fatality in a fire at Denver.
(without the childish emotion)

Shell Management,

A refueller lost his life. Don't you think your 'boo hoo' emotion is a bit inappropriate?
