Turkish Airlines - TK1754 hijack attempt

Not much news apart from the pax put on a mask and started shouting in turkish. While trying to enter flight deck he was overpowered by two people.

BBC report on the story HERE.

The wannabe "terrorist" was denied residency/asylum in Norway and deported sans police escort since he was considered non-dangerous. Just one of those things.

Ancient Mariner -

"Just one of those things"? Are you are total idiot? Most would not consider a situation on an aircraft as described "just one of those things".

jghill 6th Jan 2011 16:59

But it *is* just one of those things. Couldn't have been predicted or prevented. Nobody hurt in the end. Sometimes crap happens. We can't foolproof the works.

It also demonstrates how past experiences have shaped how things unfolded: the hijacker didn't get into the flight deck and was instead overpowered. Past experience has clearly taught passengers and airlines well.

So yes, it's one of those things.

eagerbeaver1 6th Jan 2011 20:58

No, it is not.

I could apply your theory to a lot of unpredictable events and summise it neatly to "just one of those things".

jghill 6th Jan 2011 23:12

That's precisely what a lot of things are: just one of those things.

These days there seem to be no accidents, mistakes or oddballs. Everything is a cause for litigation and endless investigation.

Sometimes crap just happens.

And in this case when crap happened, it was dealt with thanks to past experience.

How would *you* have stopped this incident? Demanded a psychiatric assessment of each deportee? Send a policeman with each deportee? At great expense to prevent a nonincident, whereby nothing happened because there was, thanks to past experience, very little more that could happen?

This was little more than someone having a paddy midair.

Ancient Mariner 7th Jan 2011 06:42

eagerbeaver1. No, I am not an idiot, total or otherwise. I can actually read and I suggest you give it a try.

It shows accurately that airport security is NO DEFENCE against a hijacker. However it will probably be used by those who cower in fear that we must INCREASE our efforts to make airport security even tougher.

tristar 500 10th Jan 2011 18:54

You all want to think yourselves luck!!

In the UK we probably wouldn`t have been able to deport him due to "infringing his human rights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
