TAAG 777 dropping parts from the air

A TAAG Angola Airlines Boeing 777 apparently dropped several pieces of the aircraft onto Almada, Portugal while returning to Lisbon due to vibration in the right engine:

Incident: TAAG B772 at Lisbon on Dec 6th 2010, engine vibrations, dropped parts

Several cars were damaged, but nobody was hurt.

TAAG was banned in the European Union from 2007 until this last March because of safety issues. In March the ban was lifted for some of its aircraft, including this 777.

Perhaps the ban was lifted prematurely.

Perhaps QANTAS should be 'banned' because...as I recall one of their airplanes dropped several large pieces of engine recently...:rolleyes:

remoak 7th Dec 2010 12:19

Yes but that was a First-World airline dropping bits over a Third-World country, rather than a Third-World airline dropping bits over a First-World country. Completely different... :ugh::rolleyes:

Speculating now  on 19th November a Delta B757 lost a door during approach over Denmark.... now which country classification will now be used for the US of A and which one for Denmark....
:suspect:

This aircraft had the right engine replaced in the last two weeks in the U.S.

Looks like bits of the IP or HP fan (im not as good at recognising GE engine parts)

Quite small bits then

Banning aircraft.

411A. Don't be too quick to put down QANTAS. A few USA companies have shed bits and pieces. National Airlines DC10 with uncontained failure over New Mexico in 1973, American Airlines DC10 lost engine from wing on take-off from Chicago 1979, United DC10 uncontained failure of #2 engine resulting in crash at Sioux City 1989 to name but a few.

National Airlines DC10 with uncontained failure over New Mexico in 1973...
Directly caused by a FD crew member disconnecting autothrust in the cruise, then re-engaging same later on...without due regard.
IE: finger trouble.

American Airlines DC10 lost engine from wing on take-off from Chicago 1979...
Directly caused by inappropriate maintenance actions.

Remember QF off the end with a 747 at BKK?
Not so bright on the part of the FD crew, now was it?
Flap 25 landing, idle reverse only....wet runway, long float, excessive speed.
Hello?

A major FU of the highest order.... seems to me.
Rather a large repair bill.:E

So, as we can see, it's not just 'third world' operators that have problems.

QF Bangkok Runway Over-run

411A We were talking about bits falling off aeroplanes, but since you mention QF I too believe it was a combination of a stuffed up approach, lack of Crew communication and a flawed preferred landing option in that QF had introduced Reverse Idle/25 Flap as the normal landing configuration. They had, however, not banned Full Reverse/Full Flap use. If you have read the full report as I have and earlier references to the event posted by me on this forum you would know that I have never tried to defend Qantas or the Crew whom did not seem to appreciate the runway conditions likely to be encountered. We are most aware of your feelings toward Aussies and Brits. Your contributions to Fragrant Harbour threads leave us in no doubt. :*

DC10s don't have autothrust. Whoever think they do didn't pay attention in class. I suggest it's back to the classroom to show some immediate improvement otherwise out the door post haste.

remoak 8th Dec 2010 09:40

Isn't that the 747 that Qantas rebuilt purely to retain the "we have never had a hull loss" mantra? Rumour had it that the rebuild cost more than a brand new one...

DC-10s do have autothrust. I am very familiar with the Speed and Alpha Speed issues on seperate FMAs. Believe me, they do.:ok:

Flightmech 8th Dec 2010 09:51

Before this turns into a massive p**sing contest, It would be fair to say that most airlines have had unauthorised detachments from their aircraft at some point in their life. It's just that some get highlighted more than others.

Wrong, DC-10s have autothrottle.

Just as flex and derate is interchanged willy nilly these days, as if it the same thing, so is autothrottle and autothrust.

It is not the same thing.

Flightmech 8th Dec 2010 15:48

Ok, different terminology but I knew what I mean't. I'm sure 411A knew what he mean't too.
