From Local News.. (different one perhaps)

ROANOKE, Va. -- Pilots of an Allegiant Air jet aborted a takeoff at Roanoke Regional Airport after noticing smoke in one of the aircraft's engines.

Airline spokeswoman Sabrina LoPiccolo says the pilots noticed smoke coming out of the aircraft's right engine about 1 p.m. Friday. The Orlando-bound flight carried 142 passengers and a crew of five.

Passenger Joe Scartelli told WDBJ-TV he heard a loud boom and thought a tire had blown. Scartelli, who works for the station, says passengers remained calm throughout the incident. LoPiccolo says no injuries were reported.

The plane returned to the gate where airport fire crews doused the engine with foam. She says a replacement aircraft was expected to arrive Friday evening to take the passengers to Florida.

:hmm: Must have seen it in their rear view mirror then.

As it happens, the MD-80 series has two mirrors, actually...:)

Perhaps this led to the reporter's confusion...

protectthehornet 15th Aug 2010 19:09

mansfield is quite right...the DC9 and MD80 series (probably ninety series too) has mirrors to view the standby compass...ala Charles Lindbergh and the spirit of st. louis.

Having flown in and out of ROA, I will say its a tough airport...and IF memory serves it is one of the "special" airports in the USA due to terrain.

I don't think they could see smoke in the mirrors though...I'll bet the tower saw it and radioed...but who knows?

anyone at that airline know a guy named Jim Hubbard?

Mansfield 15th Aug 2010 19:44

According to Aviation Herald, the tower saw the smoke, and it was a low speed abort on runway 24.

This was fortuitous...ROA is a special airport, the single engine departure out of the valley would have been memorable, I'm sure.

So here's a trivia question...which part of your bifocals do you use to view the standby compass through the mirror? It fooled me for a minute one night in the sim...

It is also interesting to note...Allegiant is consistantly profitable, and from all accounts, a very well run and managed airline.
They have retained the same type (MD80) for a long time, however....they have announced that a few 757's will be added to the fleet, for longer range flights.
HNL has been mentioned.
I wish them well, but... they had better have their ducks in a row for HNL flights.
Many sharks on that route, for sure....and not just at 30N140W, or locations nearby...:ooh:

protectthehornet 15th Aug 2010 22:09

don't know about the bifocals...I use brail

;-)

kidding...but I guess the lower

Mansfield 15th Aug 2010 23:24

That's what I thought...the mirror is right in front of your face...but the image it reflects is distant, so you can't read it with the lower lens. Of course, I was all primed with an opinion of the arrangement, and when I couldn't focus on it, I was sure my point was proven. The the sim instructor suggested lowering my chin...:)

Wow that must be a real problem trying to find someone with enough experience to set the HNL route up.:ugh:

Perhaps some old out of work piston guy ;)

Setting it up and starting service is the easy part...actually making a profit, quite another.
