I totally agree with some of the posts. If you don't want to fly there, then don't.. Of course you have some morons that say, "well you know what the job entailed". Well my comment is I don't know what contract you signed, but I never say anything about possibly getting shot at.. Sure I know we fly into military zones, but you don't have to subject yourself to danger. It's bad enough that most of the 72's we fly are in rotten shape anyway:eek:

Most of the pilots of the civilised world don't live in Africa, so the chances of those folk dying from a common African disease or a South African vehicle accident is extremely remote.

While we are on the chances of dying in Africa, isn't the highest chance of dying most likely related to being murdered by a South African bad-boy?

Perhaps there will soon be plenty of jobs in DHL for South African adventurers?

I don't know, I live in a so-called civilised portion of the world but I'd visit SA again in a heartbeat. Great surfing and the country is beautiful. I wasn't impressed by Jo'burg, though.

You can get killed doing stupid things things anywhere. If you are getting paid for the risk then that is your trade-off. I just had an FAA inspector give me a route check who typed 6 guys for a DC 3 operation in the thick of things. Armor plating and NVG certification. The guys that took the job will make enough in a year to not have to work again for a very long time. They are also the type of guys that would have been flying for Air America. I flew with some of the Air America guys - they are/were adrenaline junkies.
