Talking to some guysin the crew-room at NCL it seems ambulances and fire crews are swarming the 25threshold, rumours that the Tornado crew are injured after diverting in NCL following a birdstrike and leaving the runway. Apparently it may have taken out the ILS with fog forcast.
The FO also mentioned someting about radiation worries, from the radar perhaps?

An RAF jet has crash-landed at Newcastle Airport after apparently colliding with a bird.

The Tornado, from RAF Marham in Norfolk, was diverted to the airport, where it landed at about 1700 BST and overshot the end of the runway.
An MoD spokesman said the two crew were not seriously injured and an inquiry into the crash would be held. The airport's only runway is currently closed and flights are being diverted to Durham Tees Valley and Manchester.

Heard about this on Newsbeat this evening - they said flights couldnt divert to Durham tees Valley due to them dealing with "a problem" there. Anyone know what occured there, if anything??

Second Tornado with birdstrike.

BBC News says another Tornado also suffered a birdstrike and was going to land at Durham (presumably as an emergency!) but then continued to RAF Leeming. So probably that.

I've put up a photo of the Marham jet at EGNT on the Military Aircrew section of the forum.

I can tell you the radioactivity line came from an official airport source.

Northumbria Police voicebank also says the aircraft involved was a fighter jet.

Clearly not.

If duff into is coming from official sources it is little wonder mistakes are made in the media.

The radioactive danger is a 'target' that was onboard the Tornado, apparently the Fire services at NT weren't prepared to go near the thing and were waiting for proper assistance!

:{Arrived with 27 mins holding for MME. Decided that I would divert with MMe +10 mins. At that point I asked for div but NCL approach said MME were not taking any more divs because they had ANOTHER military jet on an emergency, so we went to EDI landing with not much fuel.

All the holes lined up tonight. Stick PLOG fuel up your creek.:ugh:

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that crashed aircraft on runway=very long delay therefore not much point hanging around!

Probably the Sky Shadow pod, they have radiation hazard markings on them.

b. Real decision making.

Interesting quote on tonight's local news.

"An airport worker reported the speed of the jet to be about 300mph as it touched down"

Answers on a postcard please, and an urgent medical for the person who reported seeing that. Speed was very high, but 300mph? :ugh:

A long time ago.

I can only summise that the radiation from the "flare" should really read radiation from the FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red). This is housed in a small fairing underneath the nose and looking at the pics could well have been damaged. If so, there are some pretty nasty chemicals in the FLIR sensor that need specialist handling, hence the delay in dealing with the aircraft.

Thinking about two airports closing at once and holes lining up, reminds me of a phrase I coined many years ago.

Strange how bean counters, with all their math, can't see the big picture when they press for vapor in the tanks.

Any attempt at removing the aircraft would be hampered by the locals nicking bits of it and selling it at Catterick sunday market

Hei everybody, i saw this bird lying at the end of Rwy 07 left in the grass next to the localizer antenna. Luckily he avoided to hit the nav equipment in order to do not downgrade the airports ILS :ok:. There was a simular accident about 3-4 years ago in Rome Ciampino Rwy 15 when a citation overrun due +TS on the field. Microburst and windshear was the 100% mix to end up like him:D. Unfortunately this was a dramatique follow up story for everybody flying long time into LIRA with an VORDME15 only. ( i had to divert to LIRF that friday) Good job for the Tornado pilot as the weather must have been as usual s....y at this time of the day. Our flight was late arriving that day due of this and we had already vis3000m,BKN003 with SHRN as far as i remember! LDA was shortend by 1800m more or less for Rwy07 and TORA was give by ATC of 2085m for Rwy25. Later on our backtrack lineup 25 we saw the RAF plane with it's canope still open...and it was a hell of a rainshower going into it:{.
