The New Runway at New Delhi
Dear All,
Does anyone know the orientation of the new runway (not yet commissioned) at Indira Gandhi International Airport at New Delhi? And why are the delays in commissioning of the runway? |
I believe it to be 11R/29L. I'm not sure what the commissioning delays might be but I'd not be surprised if it were:Work in integrating the new lighting with the existingDelay in supply/fitting/testing of the new ILS.This has to be one of the strangest runways in the world, with nearly a kilometre of displacement of threshold at BOTH ends. Have to hand it to Larsen and Toubro though- they have built the runway in damn short order. I think they got the contract in Dec 06, so that's no mean feat.B

I'm out there in the week, I will find out and update you if you have no news...cheers

I do not have first hand info but something i read in the news papers sometime back. There was a whole lot of water seepage from the village nearby on the periphery of the airport. This had been going on for quiet a while from before runway was planned.
There was a whole area on the western side of the field(at the beginning of the proposed RWY 11) where the land had become marshy. The village did not have a planned sewage system. So by the time the govt. got its act together and got the villagers to stop dumping water on the airport grounds the damage was done. The delays caused at that stage are mostly responsible for the current incomplete status. I was also told about some delays on the fixtures of lighting system and the ILS etc have contributed in addition. Like i said its not forst hand so if anyone knows first hand they can correct me |
"I believe it to be 11R/29L."
Surprising to have three DIVERGING runways - of course it means that they converge at the other ends. As it is they are having problems controlling traffic with two converging runways - wonder what they will do with THREE? Also I wonder whose bright idea it was to have a diverging/converging runways instead of at least having two parallel ones. :ugh: Is the DIAL not accountable to public for such gross stupidities? |
Most likely 10R 28L
To be paralell |
The masterplan says 11R/29L, but may simply be in error
Indira Gandhi International Airport-New Terminal Building (T3) but there is a statue in the approach path DNA - India - New Delhi runway runs into tall trouble - Daily News & Analysis |
Brakes on the 380 would need be pretty good to stop in just 281 metres...!
"Delhi airport currently has two runways, which are called 10-28 (3,810 metres) and 09-27 (281 metres), but none of them can handle aircraft as big as the A-380. The new runway will be 4,430 metres long. DIAL plans to shift maximum number of take-offs and landings to this runway once it is complete." |
hope
Hope they don't
big Crash. TOO MANY LANDINGS!!!! p:eek: |
Have to hand it to Larsen and Toubro though- they have built the runway in damn short order. I think they got the contract in Dec 06, so that's no mean feat.B |
More runways...more landings...it will still take forever to get thru the terminal and the roads to the hotel. Like Bangalore getting a new airport and no quick route to the city.
I did do a 1+15 bizjet turn, international inbound to domestic flight outbound to Bangalore once. SRC Aviation was absolutely superior THAT day. |
Google earth shows sterile 10R 28L parallel.

VIDP new runway
new runway will be 11/29 (4430x60m) as published by India AIP SUP 45/2008, published on July 11th, 2008. effective date will be published by G-series NOTAM (like all the new RNAV (GNSS) SID/STAR procedures for VIDP, VABB, VAAH)

Don't know where you guys are getting your info from but this is what the airport looks like now. |
for a new completely useless sets of STARS |
The Delhi Experience
Only 45 minutes? Count your blessings!
Inbound DPN from the South. Instructed to reduce to minimum clean speed at 200 DME DPN. Slow descent at minimum clean speed. Overhead DPN at FL220. Requests for an expected approach time were ignored. Best we could get was number 35 to land. Vectored 35nm North of DPN. Vectored West approx 45nm. Vectored South through the Localiser (Rwy10) at 40 DME DPN. Vectored North to intercept the Localiser at 35 DME - instructed to maintain "minimum approach speed". Then 5 minutes later told to "increase speed 20 knots" :ugh: Total delay 1+40 with 4000kg extra fuel burn. :ooh: Current infrastructure can handle about 1/3 of the present traffic volume. Can't wait for the new runway. |
Is the DIAL not accountable to public for such gross stupidities? You've clearly not been to India... :hmm: |
Very tricky to write a STAR that includes 45 minutes of vectoring ending with an ILS intercept at 35 miles |
new runway 11/29 operational 28 Aug 08
according notam G0091/08 the new runway will be operational by 28aug08
