SFO: COCKPIT OF CARGO PLANE CATCHES FIRE AT SFO


SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BCN)
The cockpit of a cargo plane caught fire while parked at San Francisco International Airport tonight, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The fire was reported to the FAA at 10:18 p.m. on Abex Boeing 767 Flight No. 1611, FAA spokesman Bruce Nelson said.
The plane, used to transport cargo, was parked at Plot No. 11 in a remote area of the airport when the fire was reported, according to Nelson.
It was unknown if anybody was onboard the plane at the time of the fire, Nelson said.

Looking at the pictures on the freight thread indicate that this was a very intense and high temperature fire.

If an airframe is minded to catch fire, it is just so wonderful to see it self-immolate on the tarmac, instead of airborne.

Now the investigators will have a very good chance at identifying and eliminating yet another source of potential disaster, and making our jobs safer.

I can't relate to intense or high temperature from the pics.

I see aluminum melted which doesn't take either.

I remember the Machinists popping slides and cutting wires in the weeks before the EAL strike. The union, naturally, denounced these events as isolated incidents.

NTSB: Cargo carrier received threat before fire

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Federal investigators say a cargo carrier whose plane was burned in an unexplained fire had received a threat a few days before.

The National Transportation Safety Board disclosed the information Thursday. The board did not mention any link between the threat and the fire Saturday.

The blaze damaged a Boeing 767 flown by cargo company ABX Air at San Francisco International Airport. No one was injured.

The fire burned a hole through the upper fuselage of the plane, just behind the cockpit.

Several federal agencies are investigating.

I'm not sure it would have to be a w/o. Depending on the economics of the repair, there's a perfectly good 767 nose and fwd fuselage here.

I believe N330AA is in storage at Mojave or Marana.

It's registered to ABX direct, not to some Delaware or Utah bank so it will depend on what they paid for it, how far it's been amortized and when the next 'D' is due.

767-300s are in high demand (due to 787 delays), 767-200s not so much. Probably (IMO) worth more as scrap.

They go a lot faster after you open the door and the windows. So the better question is how long do you have to make it out of the aircraft before it aerates on it's own?

The pictures don't answer that question

Aircraft delivered to ANA in Jul 1986; don't know what the market value of a 22 year old converted 762F, but that looks like a lot of damage and presumably, there is also significant damage to the interior of the aircraft.

I think it's a safe guess that it'll be a write-off.
