. .DOHA: The Board of Directors of Gulf Air meeting in Muscat on Wednesday decided to relieve Ibrahim Abdullah Al Hamar from the post of the airline’s chief executive officer and chair-man, an Arabic newspaper repor-ted here yesterday.

The newspaper said Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi, former director of the Department of Civil Aviation in Qatar, was one of the strongest conte-nders for the post along with other prominent aviation personalities from the GCC states.

The airline is owned by Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Abu Dhabi. The airline has been facing a financial crunch and the board has appointed Simat, Helliesen & Eichner (SH&E), an international air transport consul-tancy, to introduce a plan to restructure the company and increase its profi-tablity, the newsp-aper added.

The board of Directors also took a set of significant decisions to reva-mp the company following the deterioration in revenues which began about two years ago, the Arabic newspaper said.

Wow!! Second set of major changes in as many years and still the same old problems exist. Maybe GF and the Board need to start addressing the real issues instead of playing musical management. This probably means that the GF072 accident report will be released soon.

So the next CEO if rumour is correct will be from a State that has its own airline!!!!!! Now tell me any "stratagey" ( and that word is used in the most flexible sense) that GF comes up with will not be in the hands of the opposition before it is even implemented. Just how much longer can an airline go on when the top ops management is in total disaray and the head honcho changes every year?? Will SH&E not be just another money burning ecxercise???

Dr. Hibbert 17th Feb 2002 11:40

Does it really take another "international air transport consultancy" to tell GF management what the problems are? Or are they going to keep hiring and firing consultants until they get one who tells them what they want to hear?

Until management recognise (or are told from on high) that they and their attitude are part of the problem, the future looks bleak indeed...

Sounds like a job for Akbar Al Baker to me.

When did his old mate Abdul Aziz (Al Nuami) retire as DGCA?

Kalium Chloride 18th Feb 2002 15:29

As far as I can make out, this entire suggestion 'bout the CEO quitting is utter claptrap.

newswatcher 19th Feb 2002 12:07

CEO widely reported in Gulf newspapers yesterday and today, on release of Gulf trading figures for 2001. Guess rumours that he has gone are premature.

sirwa69 19th Feb 2002 19:55

There is definately something fishy going on here.

Al Hamer is very much still the PCE and my sources tell me this is the Qatari's making mischief in order to try and get one of their own guys in place. They want to do this in order to weaken Gulf Air for the benefit of Qatar Air.

However it gets even murkier with a further report in todays Peninsula that the Gulf Air board has decided that the new chief executive of the airline will not come from any of the four states that own it. Gulf Air is owned by Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and Abu Dhabi.

Oooohhhh.....putting an expat in charge would be controversial, now wouldn't it?

RG 20th Feb 2002 17:52

Would an expat have any more luck than a national? One still has to deal with the alleged interference, politics and corruption and that is hard to do with your hands tied!!!

sirwa69 21st Feb 2002 03:04

I think I have got the hang of this one now.. .Al Hamer has not been sacked as such, he will stand aside as CEO but will keep a figurehead position as President. (with no power).. .An outside CEO will be appointed, rumour has it he will be some flavour of Scandahooligan.. .The CEO will have full executive powers . .er... until he tries to sack one of the family for dipping his fingers in the till

Major organisational changes happening with Bahrain to become the hub and all other gulf cities feeding into Bahrain for the long haul stuff. This is going to be real interesting. :)

Is this GF PLAN 47477422788az which involves bringing in a COO?

Has the nuclear option of concentrating on BAH been approved then?

Fangio 22nd Feb 2002 03:18

What ever happened to Salin Al Salmi? I thought that he was the rising star at GF!

boiler 22nd Feb 2002 12:41

If my info is correct, Salim Alsalmi was sacked last year when the new VPC took power.

I rather think that the GPWS is going off in the pink palace but as yet no-one has pulled the damned stick back.

MissChief 23rd Feb 2002 11:47

This topic is boring...wake me up when it's over.

Propellor 24th Feb 2002 10:26

Heard that the new Chief Executive will be an appointee of the consultancy firm, S, H & E, and they are to take over the running of the airline in due course.. .They were appointed some time back to look into GFA at the behest of Abu Dhabi.. .Hope this American firm does not take the budgie the Enron way.. .Cheers.. .-----------------------. .MissChief, I promise you that you will not be missed, should you decide to log off.

BahrainLad 24th Feb 2002 16:00

Actually, Bahrain brought in SH&E and they are responsible for the running of the airline at the moment, never mind the future.

kuku 25th Feb 2002 12:20

Bahrainland if you are correct, and SH&E were brought here by BAHRAIN then very soon we have so say GOOD BYE to GOLDEN BIRGIE !
