Easterns Mayday 9/4/08 Abz - Wic
Heard on the radio this morning a mayday call by an eastern J41, in regards to control problems (pretty sure in just pitch). Anyone know what actually caused it.
Boys made a safe landing back at Wick. Well done. Good to hear so many people offering assistance. |
AAIB Bulletin last year centred upon pitch control problems on JS41. One was caused by a lack of lubrication and the other on over-zealous tightening of the friction locks by the flight crew. i hope this wasn't something similar.

Perhaps they were confused by trim changes caused by the lowering of the landing gear. :E

Wrong type!!! ;) |
It had been snowing heavily at ABZ before the J41 departed. I wonder if icing played a part in the control problems?
|
The J41 has a problem with de-icing fluid collecting in the elevator and refreezing at altitude, its a known problem and several bulletins have been issued.
Captain flying just happened to be the guy who first flew the J41 for BAE, nobody more experienced on type. |
Ahhhh, but how much de icing fluid went onto that aeroplane :oh:
Don't think a broom has the same effectiveness as Type IV fluid :E |
