Destroying the brand

I think in addition to sueing BALPA for damaging the BA Brand i am going to seek damages from the makers of the VASTLY POPULAR internet video game www.weewilliewalsh.co.uk in which I am depicted as being a rather crazy baggage handler, frantically chasing lost bags around a deserted Terminal 5. I will have you all know I have an MBA, that's a Masters in Business Management for those that don't know.I am well qualified and highly trained in management, like a black belt in judo. The makers of that game have seriously affected my credibility and caused people to criticise my reputation. I just won't have it. I will see them in the court

Tinytim

The question has been posed:

"what are you proposing that BALPA should do"?

Charizard 6th Apr 2008 12:34

Well, they could always start by actually standing four square behind any other airline than BA!!!!!

Hang on, that's a Vietnamese Potbelly on finals for 24R.....:oh:

Hand Solo 6th Apr 2008 12:36

What, like they did with Ryanair?

Charizard 6th Apr 2008 12:46

"Vietnamese Potbelly expedite runway clearance, we have a Gloucestershire Old Spots at four miles, and a Mora Romagnola orbiting with a trotter on fire.....:E "

Well hopefully flying judge (nee lawyer) will get the bench and we're quids in
Sadly I doubt it since His Honour is a Circuit Judge and this will be held in the High Court, hence requiring a High Court Judge or a "Red."

Charizrad - you say..

Well, they could always start by actually standing four square behind any other airline than BA!!!!!
Agreed - however having seen two companies, the real difference is the reps themselves. In the first company they were very weak and feeble - the management took that as carte blanche to do what they wanted. In BA, they are strong and mostly very hard working, management take notice.

While I agree BALPA needs to represent other companies more, and do a better job there, it often starts with the individuals in the company.

Having said that, BALPA needs to be less of a group of company councils and more of an encompassing association to defend us all.

IMHO - If it costs BALPA a lot for high court action, then so be it, I wouldn't critisice if they did the same for any other airline. Lets drag others up to the level of representation BA get, rather than pointing fingers at the BACC - after all, that's what a union is all about isn't it?

What, like they did with Ryanair?
I think you will find that while they were not the main target, BALPA did stand firm against Ryanair in the REPA case. They and IALPA were exposed to (I presume) their 50% of the sums of money that Ryanair eventually had to pay (which I am told was around €1.25-1.5 million).

Judging from some of the posts here the use of the law to threaten and frighten people actually works quite well. All the more reason to stand up to bullies of all shapes and sizes.

Hear hear, including playground amateurs like TR and HS!

overstress 6th Apr 2008 20:07

The BA pilots I've spoken to since this counter-claim came out are incensed over this.

If BA wanted to ensure that the next strike ballot approaches 100%, they couldn't have done it better.

Kurtz: your postings say more about you than you can imagine - there are many more BA pilots on here including me and I personally find your posts irritating and juvenile.

Tinytim: put the green-eyed monster back in the box re BALPA funding. Also ask yourself how the money could be better spent. What are we supposed to use it for apart from high-profile legal cases? Also, there are more external supporters than you may know about. Why not acquaint yourself with some of the facts?

BALPA previous form

Why would anyone at BALPA be worried, I understand the Jessica Starmer case was fully supported and funded by BALPA. Guess what BA got their ass kicked then, looks like they didn't learn the lesson that time.

harpic 6th Apr 2008 20:56

I don't think BA would...........

.......have started this unless they thought there was a good chance of achieving their aims.

Any comparison with the Starmer case is spurious. My guess is that BA are going to stick it to Balpa no matter what.
100% strike ballot is not the same as a 100% solid strike - even the miners under Scargill didn't achive that.

ZeBedie 6th Apr 2008 21:03

I'm a BALPA member, but not in BA. If BALPA spend every penny they have, re mortgage the office and borrow all they can in order to win this, then fine. THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY SHOULD DO.

Silverspoonaviator 7th Apr 2008 08:34

BA not doing its brand any favours

I think BA should take itself to the court, and establish damages to its self for the fiasco at T5, then perhaps they could lead a class action for the passengers that have been mislead by the BA advertising promises.....etc, etc.

silly me.....ssa

Willie Wash 7th Apr 2008 09:00

Ba Dividend

I don't know about all this concern over the finance of the BALPA TU, I think we should let them worry about that. I for one would be completely confident that BALPA will succeed in the high court. BA in typical Union busting style is just throwing as much fuel into the fire to 'scare' those members who may be wavering. There will be some and I think resolute and professional leadership from BALPA will keep them onside and focused.

As a shareholder in BA (ouch) I and the other shareholders can be very worried and concerned. BA is shortly to announce that they will NOT be paying a dividend following last years financial results. No dividend since 9/11 and looks like none in 2008, clearly they need the money for their legal fees......

The most important thing to remember that nobody wins in these battles, but for BALPA they have little choice than to defend their position with all their vigour. They will win, right over might!

sussex2 7th Apr 2008 13:33

What? BA management accusing others of affecting the reputation of the company...
It is enough to make you cry!

Damage to reputation and brand ?

First came King, Marshall and Dirty Tricks.

Then Ayling with his silly aircraft tails, Skippy who killed Concorde and now wee Willie and the T5 fiasco.

The loss of reputation and brand has nothing to do with BALPA; I'm sure many non-ba passengers feel considerable sympathy towards ba's crews. I certainly do.

Hear, hear ! Well said BEagle !

courtney 7th Apr 2008 16:09

What arrogance, who are BALPA to judge management proficiency they couldn't run the proverbial whelk stall. All of this merely confirms the determination of so many of us to avoid BA at any cost.

northeast canuck 7th Apr 2008 18:00

Let me think about this... BA have managed to strand me when their staff walked off on a wildcat strike, lose my bags on several occasions, cancel my flights (one of which was booked with the compensation they gave me for stranding me earlier!), and delay me on numerous occasions. They have almost never got me to where I need to go, and if they do they get me there late.

And now they want to bankrupt my UNION? Who the h*ll do these arrogant pr*cks think they are? They are a national disgrace, and a menace to my industry and profession. When are they going to learn that they DO NOT have a god-given right to exist, and if they keep it up they won't for much longer. I avoid them like the plague anyway for all the above reasons.

BALPA are absolutely right to take on BA and I give them my full support.
