Understand all UA 777's grounded today - does anyone know why?

UA935 LAX, UA931 SFO, UA925 IAD, UA939 DEN, UA959 ORD all cancelled today

Lots of flights ex-LHR showing canx on their website due 'aircraft servicing'

Was the reason for the update that they were removing EGLL from the database?

Real or not, does anybody know the legalities of flying with an out of date database in FAA and JAR land? I've never really thought about it before to be honest. Our gingerbeers get it all done behind the scenes and it always works.

I am guessing that it if this is real (and if it isn't what a crap 1/4 joke) it is a no no if they had to ground the entire fleet and get FAA approval to operate?

Anyone?

I do not know about JAR but FAA rules say that you can fly with an out of date data as long as you can verify every single way point via an uptoday navigation chart. As far as I know also ICAO rules also allow you to do the say with the say requirement. I fly in India and with the new hydraban airport opening delay for two weeks. We were required to use the expire data when flying that route as per notac.

This it is getting out of hand with the FAA and the airlines. Why all of the suden they are doing something about when all this **** have been happening for at least the last decade. Expecially big boy of the airlines they get away with murder when it comes to compliance. :\:mad::ugh:

Read the article, it states "all 33' were grounded. That has to be old news as UAL now have 52 777's.

I understand the navigational databases have been found to be "out of date" and hence need updates. Not sure exactly what that entails and how long this means they will be on the ground.

BTW: this can't have anything to do with database-issues: AFAIK these are only changed at airac dates (next I think is april 10).

Edit: post #16 says it all.

Cargo fire bottle inspection issue. We have 52 airframes to check.

How long does it take?
 

Any idea how long per ac to do the check? Just trying to figure out the liability with 52 frames to work. Also have seen possibly as many as 3 ferrying back from the Pacific to KSFO...I guess for this check.
