Boeing 777 Saudi Airlines plane lands with damaged wing..old news?
Excuse me if this has already been covered somewhere but i've just come accross this video of a Saudi 777 with an apparantly damaged wing and leaking hydraulic fluid:

Not a good thing.
I'll be anxious to hear more. |
Happened a few days ago - great footage.
Appears to be a debonding issue between flap drive hardware and composite structures. Boeing & the NTSB are on their way down. To establish the facts, blur responsibility and protect US business interests. 4HP |
Not a word of it on the Boeing website although the Southwest problem has been addressed there.
|
Looks really bad. It looks like it may well have been a hydraulic hydraulic problem as suggested earlier, since one of the spoiler panels remained up.
|
Nice video.
Did the hole go all the way through or just topside separation. I had my money on ingestion of something. Oh well. |
As far as I can see from available information and flight data, this incident most likely concerned SV1020 from Jeddah to Riyadh on March 10th 2008. The B777-200 was taken out of service and the remaining sectors of the day flown with a B747-300.
The author of the video wrote, that the hole appeared about 900 meters above ground with a loud bang. The video is available on youtube, too, where the author has left the more detailed description of the incident: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMJEwBXXbr8 Servus, Simon |
Since the problem appeared 'at about 900m with a loud bang', it's a fair bet that part of the main gear cross bracing suffered a failure and was forced upwards through the rear wing structure. In the video the flaperon/flap and spoiler operation appears normal, although there is obviously some hydraulic line fracture and/or leakage. Maybe the flight was lucky not to have had a gear collapse on touchdown.
|
Yes - It does seem it's part of the right gear through the wing. Ouch !!
|
If you look near the end at 1:35 you can see that panel has gone back down again.
|
No, the single panel is extended throughout the entire video. Look towards the top of the video....
Spoiler #9 is already up when the video starts, and at touchdown (00:16) spoilers #7 and #11 pop up. At 00:50 #7 and #11 are stowed, leaving the single #9 still extended... Spoilers #8, #10, and #12 remain stowed throughout the entire video...:ouch: |
so the hydaulic pressure goes and spoiler goes up and stays there? :ooh:
|
I wonder why this incident has been pulled from Flight International / flightglobal.com? In my IE history I find http://http://www.flightglobal.com/a...268/video.html and http://http://www.flightglobal.com/a...fers-wing.html but when I visit flightglobal 4 hours after I saw these articles I find nix. Advertiser got the hump did he?
|
Can anyone translate what the pilot is saying? just out of curiosity
|
Tallbloke, you've got two lots of http:// in those URLs, if you click on these two they should work for you.
