Emirates A340 AOG in EBB due birdstrike

To add to the 340's misery this week: saw a blacked out A340 on the apron in EBB (Entebbe). Reportedly 3 fanblades in one of its engines are damaged due to a birdstrike. Birdstrikes very frequent here.

Birdstrikes have long been a problem at EBB. One reason is large bird population nearby who have discovered that as the sun rises it warms the runway nicely so it's a nice place to sit and eat your breakfast, having caught it in nearby vegetation or Lake Victoria , according to taste.

I seem to recall that there is a bird sanctuary at the end of the runway (lakeside).

Some of those "Kites" (bird type) have a very large wingspan!

Is an A340 certified to do a 3 engine ferry to a maintenance base??
Undrstand some types eg bae146 can.

Skylion 20th Nov 2007 13:45

A 340 should be able to do a 3 engine ferry,- one of the advanatges of using it rather than a 330 on many African routes.

Those birds being known as '****eHawks' to us old 'Whitecap & Tusker' drinking expats. Had one upcountry bloke who blagged a few from the lake Vic Hotel garden one morn after an all night bash back in the late 60s.

3 Engine ferry out of EBB !!! :uhoh::uhoh::uhoh:

3 engine ferry should be no problem out of EBB,

Departing RWY 17 to the south, over the lake with 5 hrs of gas and no payload should be a breeze.

On the other hand, getting an engine into one of the A310's that fly the freighter route should be just as easy.

Hang on a minute , cost of a 310 with engine to EBB is way too high.
Better to risk the insured aircraft , no way to lose any money .
And the crew is replaceable. Easy choice try the 3 engine ferry , that way company cannot lose.

3 ENG Ferry would be a NO GO

:) I dont think anybody in Trng Dept has done the required SIM trng and then granted approved by Operator, Airbus and GCAA.

Oh yes, and isn't there a rubbish tip near the A/P.

Just like there used to be next to the threshold of VABB27. Eventually, and after many bird strikes, somebody associated the two and removed the nearby food source. :ugh:

Yep, unfortunately the whole place is now a giant rubbish tip!

Didn't used to be though, many moons ago!
