Jazz RJ Gear Collapse at CYYZ

Landing gear collapses after flight touches down in Toronto

An Air Canada plane ran into trouble when its front landing gear collapsed Sunday at Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport, but no one was injured, airport officials said.

After the CRJ-100 regional jet aircraft touched down, its main landing gear buckled while the plane was moving from the active runway onto a taxiway, Air Canada spokeswoman Manon Stuart said.

The 37 passengers and three crew members aboard Flight AC8911 were not injured, Stuart said.

Everyone was released following medical examinations at the airport, and some passengers continued on to connecting flights, she said.

This is the first time an incident like this has occurred involving this aircraft, a 50-seat Canadian regional jet, Stuart said.

The incident is being investigated by the Transportation Safety Board.

A local Toronto television station reported that the Jazz jet, a regional subsidiary of Air Canada, touched down on runway 6 and was parked on a nearby taxiway.

The station said that both the runway and the taxiway were closed, pending the investigation.

It looks to me like something that the gear attaches to has failed.

I got a rather interesting Powerpoint presentation of the incident and the subsequent recovery by the engineers. Hard landing, not gear failure - engine ingested flap parts, main gear ripped from it's frame.

Bet that got their attention

Atlantic Southeast Airlines had a CRJ200 main gear shear off on landing a few years ago. No significant injuries and not all that much damage to aircraft either. Bombardier said it was a manufacturing defect.
There is also a significant problem with CRJ700 gear doors cracking or falling off planes. So far the solution has been to take the gear doors off that are cracked, send them away for a few months to be repaired, and then wait until they crack again. Aircraft is limited to .78M cruise with the gear door(s) removed.

Aircraft is limited to .78M cruise with the gear door(s) removed.
Not any more; that was never intended to be a "limitation", and as of Jan 16th this year (for TC MMEL) it's been changed to more "advisory" type wording in a more recent revision, and I expect it to be removed in the near future. The FAA change may still be making its way through the system, though.

With the caveat, of course, that whatever paperwork you have right now obviously is the thing to obey.

That is good news someone is working on removing the .78M restriction. About 20% of the fleet is missing at least one gear door. With only one door missing there is a pretty nice roll when gear is down due to asymmetric drag. It also makes it hard to get above FL370 with all the extra drag.
