"2,600 jobs to go at Thomas Cook"

BBC News now carrying this story. Any details of any airline related effects?

expedite_climb 26th Oct 2001 17:27

RVR800 26th Oct 2001 17:31

'The company said it was grounding some charter flights and closing 100 travel agencies..........'

It has not said how many of the jobs will go in the UK.

Eff Oh 26th Oct 2001 17:37

Does this mean that as JMC flight deck, our jobs are at risk?? (Bottom 100 on the seniority list.) :( Also the CEO's briefing stated that we were trying to "better utilise aircraft and hotel capabilities." Not sure if that means grounding some or not.
Eff Oh :(

Eff oh ,I understand from a reliable source that the JMC company credit card was rejected today as payment for a crew to position back from Brussels.Hope things get better for you.Genuine concern.

Foo Kinnell 26th Oct 2001 23:48

Sledge

Your 'genuine concern' in this context is unwarranted

Thomas Cook are making cutbacks in response to the current situation - in common with all other well-managed operators. It would be worrying if they were not doing this.

JMC has people who take care of crew travel & accomodation. Fronting up to a ticket counter flashing the Co credit card is not the way it is done so it would be unsurprising if such a method was not accepted

Sledge - if your company is not taking similar care over its expenditure your genuine concern should be for your own job

I second that Foo. I don't think we are quite that bad yet.
Eff Oh.

I was told yesterday by a JMC crew that they had received a company fax(whilst overseas) in which they were informed that aircraft total fleet number was to be reduced by 20%. The crew, needless to say, were devastated.
I did not see the fax so cannot confirm.

tailscrape 29th Oct 2001 23:10

Willoman,

I doubt it very much.

Your post may be true in coming days and months, but companies have to CONSULT now................

Your post does you no credit whatever.

willoman 30th Oct 2001 00:21

tailscrape - I am not remotely interested in credit. I am simply reporting the facts relayed directly to me by a JMC crew. I do not work for JMC.

May I suggest you check your sources? I flew with the CP last night and he certainly wasn't aware of any fleet reduction.

Is it true that the eight or ten A320’s that were going to the USA are now not going and the ones that were going to City Bird are now not going? Understand from a friend at JMC that Garuda now do not want the A330? Sounds like a lot of aircraft with no work for the winter?

SchmiteGoBust 30th Oct 2001 12:19

Rolling Stone,
Citybird is still on. 2 aircraft already there operating.2 gone to the states as well. All looks O.K. at the moment for the sub-charters. However situation seems to change daily. The Citybird is now rumoured to be for three years non stop!!
All should be O.K. as long as the great british free press will stop inciting fear of flying and talking the general consumer population into starting a recession. It appears the media is controlling the economy at the end of the day, not the goverment!!!
I AM UPPER CLASS SO IT WON'T AFFECT ME ANYWAY :D :D

Rolling Stone 30th Oct 2001 16:37

Well that is good to hear. Some one had told me that City Bird had stoped operating.

Here Here ScmiteGB. The Media is killing our & other industries

SchmiteGoBust 30th Oct 2001 22:14

Absolutely true Desk Driver. I'm not an economist, but I always thought recession was brought on by high mortgage rates, enemployment and the like. These things amount to people having less money, hence recession. Is this right?
The bl@@dy media are talking the country into a recession and risking my job during the process, thankyou very much!!!
Mortgage rates have never been lower in my memory, so people have never been so well off. Unemployment generally is also very low.
Could somebody please, please, explain to me why the media is fuelling the country into recession and why the hell are they being allowed to do it. They are actually helping the terrorist's aims by destabilising, what in my memory, is the most stable economy we've had for years!!It is really pi$$ing me off.

Rolling Stone:- Just to clarify, I was referring to JMC carrying on Citybirds flights with the 320 sub-charters. Sorry if I mislead. ;)

Mr Angry from Purley 30th Oct 2001 23:36

A lot of the Pilots towards the bottom of JMC are wobbling because they have been making telephone calls to UK Carriers that are planning to recruit next year

In the normal case of closure or redundancy, dsiplaced staff find jobs in other airlines quickly. Clearly this time that is not going to be the case so everyone is hoping they don't get the dreaded telecon or letter, myself included...
