141 staff out at JMC
 
JMC have made 141 permanent cabin crew redundant at LGW this morning. Once they have left they are to be offered temp contracts for the summer. This is another kick in the teeth for the loyal staff at the green tailed ********.. .Does anybody know if it is only cabin crew or are there driver redundancies to come.

First sympathy to those being laid off...but can someone please explain the rationale for pilots going from JMC?

And this re-hire for summer contracts for cabin crew stinks..turn 'em down and make the company train up new people that they need.

Do JMC not have their usual Canadian contingent comming over again for this summer? Why the redundancies for cabin crew and drivers? Does it equal some removal from service of airframes, or redeployment of them elsewhere ?? Whatever, it all smells a bit fishy.

JMC always had there staffing levels wrong. They had permanent crews to cover there busy summer programme but in the winter they sat around not doing alot. Now they are trying to get there staffing levels to what they need to run there winter programme as most other charter boys do. Then they just bring in temp staff in the summer...... . .This doesn't help the loyal ex Caledonian and Airworld/colours staff who have been loyal for many years. Some of the girls who have been kicked out started with cally 10 years ago.

Might it be a case of JMC inheriting LGW crews from Airworld / Cally with perm contracts then reducing their LGW flying, thus leaving them overstaffed?

Is not JMC a predominately "charter carrier" and therefore busier in the summer than in winter? If so....temp crews in the summer make perfect economic sense...so whats the beef?

The beef is that they were recruiting staff on PERMANENT contracts through the spring of 01, after they had pulled out off certain longhaul routes, (struggling to recruit on temp only contracts?!) The staff side of the business units suggested to the management that recruiting to the level of permies would only cause problems, but this advice was ignored.

Do you go and get a mortgage on a temp contract? No! Some of my friends now have mortgages because of their permanent status and will be looking for that paddle on the crappy brook to survival.

What is a permanent contract worth? Well it has given the unfortunate people to lose their jobs a redundacny payout, calculated on basic money.

The lucky few?! will be asked back after one month to start on a temp contract with no benefits to see the summer out.

I have spent the last few days with some of the surplus crew, which has been very difficult for me, so you can imagine what it has been like for them.

Comments like whats the beef do not need to be said, are of no benefit to anyone and will only upset people who do not need another kick!

Show some compassion or keep it zipped!

If you have no experience of the subject or knowledge of it, keep your trap shut.

The people affected are colleagues of mine and are no doubt in distress now. Your crass and inept comments are heartless.

I trust those affected will kick up and see a fair result. This is the culmination of a very sad and poorly handled mess by jmc management.

Sorry for the distress, lightbulbs and tailscrape, but my comments still stand. If JMC is mostly a charter carrier, and busier during the summer, do you not think it reasonable for the company to have the flexibility to recruit for that period only? The only other option is to recruit permanent staff, and furlough in the winter...the results are the same, are they not?. .Otherwise, the company would go broke, which benefits....no one. . .Those who join charter carriers should "know" that the schedule changes from time to time, and if they do not, will learn shortly. Call it a lesson in economics...and yes, it can be painful at times. If they want more or less permanent employment, they should join a scheduled carrier...and even then as a junior guy/gal, nothing is guaranteed.. .It's called the airline business. <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">

411's right - it's not being heartless, it's just a reality of modern-day cut-throat business practices.

From an airline / employer point of view it makes great commercial / financial sense to do this, there are even a few plus points for the pilots / employees too, but I'll leave you to go figure just what. <img src="wink.gif" border="0">

Thus I'll go so far as to wager that as the years roll by there'll be more and more airline pilots working on a 'contract' basis than you'd ever think possible today - and the days of the 'Teamsters' are long gone !

Employment rights were a tad worse than this 100 years ago, then a few little scuffles along the way, employment rights seemed to pick up!

Lets not forget what our forefathers struggled to achieve!

It is not going to be easy, especially with some of the defeatest attitudes I have read on this thread, but people should not give up.

Still what do I know, i'm not from the land of the free!

Would the end of the JMC / AML / BA contract in March have anything to do with JMC Gatwick being overstaffed with Cabin Crew. Some 300 JMC Cabin Crew were employed on the BA contract. Where do they go ?. . . . C

Only the 80 seconded and the 40 odd transfers came back.

If the ones that wanted to come back a month ago, over 200 cabin crew would have gone!

Good for the lucky girls that escaped the chop, but what does it say about JMC, that of 300'ish crew that are going in march, that 40 wanted to come back!!

ou don't need a union, we are not that sort of company!!!!!!!!!!

the main reason why only 40 777 crew wanted to transfer is that they have never considered themselfes jmc crew and having spoken to many downroute they would not lower themselfes to do "charter" work . It had nothing to do with jmc just that they thought they were BA dispite jmc paying their wages !!

Normal temp Cabin Crew turnover @ LGW is such that. .Crewing levels are always down @ LGW, sometimes seriously at the end of Summer (October). This normally results in temps being offered perm contracts to meet the establishment figures.

Don't forget that JMC also closed down some of their outstations (CWL/BRS/LTN/NCL?) as well.

Not good for crew moral

Banzai Chap, since when has the NCL JMC base closed?

Last I heard 7 cabin crew were finished, leaving a dozen left to cop with the 15 weekly summer flights!

If JMC is the second one to abandon NCL, it leaves BY, My Travel and one charter company which NCL gets every year, remember Nordic, Transwede, Ambassador, Seven Air and now its Air Scandic! <img src="confused.gif" border="0"> <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Besides the closure of bases, this wouldnt be anything to do with JMC announcing today that they are going to reduce C/C to the bare CAA legal for this Summer of 5 on B757's, and 4 on A320's would it?

I assume that quite a few remaining staff are going to be a little worn out come the end of the Summer?
