engine fire BMI A320

Anyone know anything about the engine fire on a BMI A320 at LHR on Tuesday at approx 17.00. The aircraft was departing runway 09R when #1 engine caught fire. Thats all I know, can anyone shed some more info??

point5 2nd Dec 2004 08:58

R/w closed for around 15mins. 09L single. A/c aborted t/o.

Halfwayback 2nd Dec 2004 08:59

It suffered an engine stall after setting take -off power.

Small residual burn in the tail-pipe made it more spectacular than it was.

Under investigation by AAIB

HWB :D

Runway was closed for longer than 15 mins - more like an hour!

details as follows

BMI A320 G-MIDY (BD181 to CDG) on 09R had engine stall warning in Port engine at 20 kts.Indications initially showed engine stall followed by engine fail followed by EGT warning. A BA skipper behind the aircraft saw flames and reported this to ATC who then instigated an AGI ( time 16:31)

Fire Sevice arrived ( causing damage to all those lovely new grass areas on the T5 dual taxiways on the way) and used water to extinguish the flames from inside the engine. The captain did not carry out an evacuation and was happy with the reports from the fire service as to the state of the containment of the fire . The fire service continued to cool the engine as "hot spots" were seen on thermal imaging equipment.

The aircraft was towed to the nearest stand so the pax (58 including crew) could disembark quickly without having a long tow to Terminal 1.

Aircraft towed from 09R and runway back in use at 17:37.

1 hr 6 min closure - txt book operation with minimul disruption. - good job all round
AAIB attended and investigation being carried out.

OK - fair cop! Missed out the word 'look'

but a girl is entitled to express an idea in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction - and then change her mind!

As long as you can sleep tonight now final3greens after sharing that with the world. Must have been good to get that off your chest.

Do you make it your duty to go thorugh PPRune looking for opportunities to correct people or is it that you just have nothing worthwhile to add?

Aha! THAT is why we were delayed taking off for Cape Town on BA43. Just over 1 hour wait.

I did wonder what was going on.

Spitoon 4th Dec 2004 11:42

Mac, shame no-one told you at the time.

E. MORSE 4th Dec 2004 19:46
