Apparently, United has dropped 72's and 73's from ORD-RDU and will be serviced by RJ's.

The RDU-IAD routes have been cut as well.

Read today that UA is accelerating retirement of all the 727's and 737-200's.

United warns of cash drain as it revamps schedule
Dateline: Tuesday October 16, 2001

United Airlines "will perish sometime next year" if it cannot stop its current cash hemorrhage, Chairman and CEO James Goodwin told employees last week as he unveiled plans to rebuild the flight schedule completely effective Oct. 31 in the wake of the airline's announced 26% schedule reduction.

Goodwin said that even before Sept. 11 "we were not in a comfortable situation, with costs exceeding our revenue on a daily basis." Today, however, costs exceed revenues "at four times the pre-Sept. 11 rate."
The schedule change, the largest in the carrier's history, will affect 90% of United's PNRs and require notification of 2.8 million customers regarding travel in Nov. and 2.4 million in Dec. The biggest change in the schedule is that United is shortening its flying day, reducing the number of flights before 7 a.m. and after 7 p.m.

United Trims Schedule
Airline Pulls Plug on Another 200 Flights

By Mark Baumgartner

Oct. 16 — United Airlines will drop another 200 flights a day from its schedule in response to a persistent slump in air travel.
The Chicago-based airline said the new schedule takes effect Oct. 31 and calls for 1,664 flights a day, down from 1,850. United earlier pared its schedule from 2,400 daily flights.
United is also reducing the number of nighttime flights by the end of the month.

The flight reductions will leave the nation's No. 2 carrier with 27 percent fewer departures nationwide, forcing the airline to change reservations for millions of passengers.

Ticket-holders for affected United flights are being notified of the changes, a company spokesman said. The calls are being handled by United reservations staff working in concert with travel agents.

The pullback could add to the ranks of pilots, flight crews, ground crews and maintenance workers facing layoffs. United has said it will cut at least 20 percent of its work force of 100,000 in response to the industry downturn.
