CF6 uncontained failure
 

I understand that a CF6-50 powered 747 Freighter had to return to HKG because it had an uncontained turbine failure.

Has anyone heard anything about this incident?

I have had confirmation that there was a CF6-50G uncontained turbine failure on a 747 cargo aircraft leaving HKG. I know this is old news and uncontained events on the CF6 aren't exactly rare but this engine was supposedly modified to the latest and greatest standard to prevent uncontained events through the turbine.

Is the aircraft still flying? If so not much of an event.

Aircraft have lots of tolerance and not all uncontained events are equal.

Sioux City types come around once in 10 years.

It was a Lufthansa Cargo 747-200F, don´t know which one.

I've just been told that another CF6 has had an uncontained failure coming out of SYD over the past couple of days. I think it was a Thai aircraft. Don't have any further details.

Does anyone know anything more about this event?



Typo on the previous note the HKG event was a CF6-50E2

Don't know how that was a mere typo. CX's three ex Varig 200Fs are also equiped with CF6-50E2 engines, which apart from early pneumatic plumbing problems, performed extremely well during my tenure.

There was Thai's aircraft from BNE with multiple engines failure. They've got 1 back right after the flamed out and couple of minutes later for the other one. The engines are CF6-80.

hotdog, The typo was on the engine mark previously identified.

Since the CF6-50 and -80 has an open AD for over 60 uncontained events through the turbine the latest events aren't really a surprise.

Although the engine type has also clocked up a lot of hours with many not having any problems so your experience in CX isn't really a surprise either.
