Allegedly an engine issue. Landed safely.

I tuned into online ATC just in time to hear QF44 being handed from Director (East) to Sydney Twr. The twr controller acknowledged QF 144's Pan message before giving instructions.
(BTW - there were over 900 listeners tuned in to the frequency!)

Media is reporting a Mayday was initially issued but later downgraded to Pan.

OMG, Sky News milking this one, "the unfolding emergency situation (for the plane that landed perfectly fine nearly an hour ago).
I might give an eyewitness account. I wasn't actually on board the flight, but I once was on a Qantas flight, but not NZ to Sydney.
GT's phone will be ringing HOT.

The video on the above link shows both reversers operating on landing.

Dave; not sure about that. Assuming I'm looking at the same video, you can only see the stbd reverser. I don't think the still shot before it is of the same aircraft.

As for theage describing the flight as "over the Pacific Ocean", unless my geography is at fault, that has always been the Tasman Sea.

Apologies - I mean the videos in the first post from NewDaily, though one of them now seems to have been pulled.

I did grab this screenshot before it disappeared, showing both T/Rs deployed:

although it may be that this is just a stock video and not the landing in question.

Looks like the issue occurred about 20 minutes after they reached FL35. AND they continued to SYD.

Rest easy - the Melbourne Herald Sun has got to the root of the issue:

There’s no ADS-B surveillance coverage over the Tasman from that point just after top of climb off the NZ coast until the signal was received again closer to Australia. It didn’t take them two hours to drift down to FL200, it’s just a straight line drawn between the gaps in the coverage.

Looking forward to 1 minute of “Breaking News reporting” by concerned, serious looking “talking heads” followed by 10 minutes of insightful commentary from “traumatized passengers” and the necessary speculation by an “Aviation Expert” as to cause.
