Watchdog launches investigation into Qantas flight that issued mayday after losing engine

I hope they have luck finding the engine. The Pacific Ocean is a big area and deep.
Did the crew make a note of where the engine was lost?
That would be the first question asked by the "Watchdog"
If they did not, tea and biscuits.

Isn't there an old joke about a maintenance log entry?

Pilot entry: "#1 engine lost during descent."
Mechanic's entry: "#1 engine found under left wing - maintenance ticket closed."

Av Herald update says engine failed 300nm east of Sydney - not at TOC.

I think it harks back to piston engine days and went:

Pilot entry: "Left engine missing"
Maintenance entry: "Engine found after short search"

Damn I'd hate to lose an engine!!

Do you have any idea of how expensive they are?? You can be sure the company would charge you for it.
