Sounds about right, limited flying going on and a decent trip comes up.

From The Aviation Herald:-

However, there are also reports of a well known software bug in the FMS, which reduces the takeoff mass by about 90 tons on the FMS (without affecting the manually entered V speeds) if the takeoff mass is entered before engine start. This could result in incorrect flaps monitoring speeds and such incorrect protection speeds while not affecting the actual takeoff performance.

The T/O mass is always entered into the FMS before engine start. Isn't it?

Don't know about 346, but 343, 320....

Regardless of the cause for the mistake I find it remarkable that they got away from a 90mt error, especially on a 340...

Super VC-10

Isn't the point of this thread that actual takeoff performance was affected, and significantly so?

By the grace of God it limped into the air.

If it was so 'well known', why did they miss it?!

Yup... But not all, thankfully for them.
I guess it they want to thank someone it would be the fly by wire software designers at AB. The built in protections most likely saved the day...

What on earth is the race card exactly? Who "plays" these cards.

And how does a race card apply to aviation matters such as noise abatement busts or tail strikes? These are measurable events, and having a white or non-white skin has no bearing whatsoever.

Having flown the -600 it was as you say data entry before engine start and I have never heard of this software bug. Finger trouble and wrong data YES.

The Aviation Herald (Incident: SAA A346 at Johannesburg on Feb 25th 2021, Alpha Floor Activation on departure) has a fairly succinct and up to date summary available. As more than one politician has found out before now however, the original offence can usually be explained and forgiven, but the cover-up and lies have a habit of biting hard.

According to sources on the ground as it were, the crew consisted of the acting CP and 3 others who are of the approved hue ( or charitably, belong to the correct union). Everyone else, including training staff are currently locked out... Getting this debacle airborne on the second attempt, required no fewer than 13 exemptions from the tame CAA! In addition to the Alpha Floor faux pas out of Jhb, I'm told that the same crew managed to bust a speed clearance and rang a couple of noise monitors across Brussels, on their departure with a few hundred kg of vaccines as sole cargo.

when a "pending Alpha Floor" was signalled
What is that supposed to be intimating? The low energy warning?

A340 crew, does it have alpha lock to keep S1 out?

Apparently SAA are now lauding the crew as heroes for "saving" the aircraft by "taking appropriate action"?

SAA pilots hailed for preventing take-off disaster (businesslive.co.za)

How were they allowed to enter EU airspace with 13 exemptions?

Don't know the -600 but 340-300 has alpha lock. Came up many times on EDDF 25 departures to the north
