You couldn't make it up!
So POTUS flies to conferences on public transport to reduce wastage does he? And when he gets there he supports the environmentalists? Good chap.

The use of fossil fuels on today's grand scale, to power our industry, domestic appliances motor vehicles, even aircraft is a relatively new phenomena. [Considering the age of the earth]. So what caused the previous dramatic changes in world temperature which affected sea levels, drowned forests, changed the shape of continents etc??

Man's ability to beat the elements......whether it's rain, snow, gales, floods or whatever has always proved difficult or impossible. So whilst I can accept that 'man' has aggravated the climate change issues, I find it difficult to accept that man has either caused the climate change or is capable of preventing it???

Discuss!!

But no, we have to be seen to be there flying the flag; and the plebs will never work out that we are really causing a particularly bad example of the very thing we are asking them to stop doing!

Apparently Dame Emma Thompson has been supporting the protesters, having flown in from LA. Do what I say, not....................

That's a round trip of over 10,000 miles (providing the NATS are favourable).

Thanks Emma - great contribution. Well done you.

APU On, Engine Start Valves OPEN. FF...love it!

Oh, wait a mo, just need to open the window and have a quick spew over the sheer hypocrisy of it all.

Wasnt that aircraft flying whether Emma Thompson was on it or not?

Probably. But fuel burn IS related to weight - otherwise there would be no such thing as overweight baggage and we could all fly for free.

@Helen49 : My view too. Doesn’t negate the need to be cleaner in our habits and reduce the population a little. I am sick and tired of people “protesting” and politicians taxing things to “do something about it” while nobody has a coherent long-term policy. This ain’t going to be fixed in months, or even years.

The idea of giving up flying as a gesture to reduce climate change is depressing and flawed.

Aviation contributes a small overall share of global co2 emissions. If everyone stopped flying entirely and the whole sector were shut down, there would be no noticeable change to global warming.

on top of that, it would now take a month to visit anywhere in Asia or the West coast of North America.

if the same naive, attention-seeking ingrates who are protesting in London hadn't destroyed the nuclear industry with uninformed hysteria, we'd not be in the situation we now find ourselves.

additionally, if we reduce the UK's net carbon emissions to zero by 2025, and reduce our travel options to those available in the 19th century, it would also make no difference to global warming. Do people honestly think the UK's self-destructive virtue signalling would prompt the Chinese or Indians (who together will soon be responsible for the majority of all pollution) to change their ways?

This chap is pretty good at explaining a multitude of different scientific events (his explanation of what we saw with the recent blackhole image is brilliant).

However, if you ignore the rather irritating production, then this explains some of those misconceptions about climate change.

We are tipping the planet out of balance.

Edit to add: As mentioned though, singular countries efforts are futile compared so the main polluters in this world. Still, a good way for governments to increase taxes on everyday life.

Absolutely agree that the environment is going to the dogs - and society is to blame and that it has to act soon.
However getting bogged down in detail distracts from the fact that this event was organized, as Brexit was organized, as yellow vest protests were organized as Trump support was organized, not by chance - but by outside interests.
While we argue about detail, the trolls of Mr Putin are having a field day.

Always thought about this myself. Who can explain the massive and relatively rapid retreat of the ice sheets over the northern hemisphere 15,000 years ago? And the subsequent advance again 10,000 years ago and finally, their retreat back to the polar regions - certainly not human influence.

I'm convinced volcanic activity has a huge impact on the climate; major eruption (Mount St Helen's, for example) colder winters. The smallest particles of dust get into the stratosphere and are able to travel vast distances, often worldwide. These tiny particles are so light that they can stay in the stratosphere for months, blocking sunlight and causing cooling over large areas of the Earth.

There’s been a theory that even our own planet’s orbit has more impact on the Earth’s temperature than we are aware. I’ve read theories from scientists that we do not necessarily rotate around the sun in a perfect circle. Sometimes there is a slight wobble and sometimes the route is slightly more elliptical. It only takes a minuscule adjustment to these degrees and we see longer hotter summers or colder winters, depending on the hemisphere.

I know this thread will shortly derail. Before that happens I just want to make the point that there is a difference between consumption based emissions and territorial emissions.

So each individual in this world has a responsibility not to consume beyond their quota, regardless of which country the actual emission takes place in. The argument is futile if you won't admit what is known about climate

Couldn't agree more. And did David Attenborough mention it in his recent programme? Whyever not? He is an active member of a population control organisation, so perhaps he was muzzled by someone for this programme.

Nor did we hear anything about carbon trading (whatever that may be, and whether it does any good) or CFC's - whatever happened to them? And has lead free petrol made any obvious difference?

We must be on our guard against current faddism which condemns some particular source of pollution for a while before moving on to something else which catches the eye of the public. Diesel emissions appear to be the current bogey, but we cannot do without more and more movements by diesel because of the ever increasing population.

Back to the point made by Emeritus.

Some interesting responses to my earlier post.......glad I'm not the only person who has considered this, although it's not a viewpoint referred to very often by the experts. [Whoever they might be!!} It seems a tad ironic that the earlier global warming episode[s] produced the very fossil fuels which are now blamed for the present state of affairs!

However, as others have said, there is certainly lots of scope for looking after our living space far more responsibly........whatever that may mean!!

Check out IICC, Internet indused Climate Change. Remarkably little is said about this. Hypocrisy might be the most appropriate word
